They're correct in that mindset.
Had anyone outside of the DFW area heard of Skip Bayless prior to his tenure at ESPN? Erin Andrews was a nobody prior to becoming a sideline reporter for ESPN's college football telecasts. Stephen A. Smith was unknown outside of Philadelphia prior to coming to ESPN. I love Simmons, but even he was largely a regional presence in Boston prior to taking advantage of ESPN's expanse of platforms.
ESPN is essentially a the sports version of SNL -- they largely "create" their own talent, and their mindset is that the viewer is consuming their product for the content and not the talent alone. Outside of Simmons, who was one of their chief content creators, they've seldom been proven wrong in that belief.
