this is what i believe.

also i heard more than once from people in B1G country that they were "boycotting the game" to avoid the SEC biased showdown; only anecdotal but still...

Makes sense to me. Both teams already played and to a casual fan, that game earlier in the season was boring. The casual fan doesn't want to see a defensive struggle and doesn't want to see a SEC West game in the national championship.

Oregon-auburn at least covered a large geographic region and was a first-time matchup. This year was a huge regional game, but there was absolutely no real national interest or storyline after the first game

This. And after the first half - a lot of people said, hey, I've seen this shite before...and went click off!

Fiesta got huge ratings because it covers more of the country, people wanted to see Okie State because of getting passed over and everyone wants to watch Luck to see all the hype.

After watching last nights shitfest, cant say I blame people for not tuning in. Talk all the shite you want, but a Baylor /Washington type shootout is much better than these field goal kicking contests that lsu/bama provided for us.

Good! I'm glad those pussies at ESPN didn't get their ratings.

It can't help that the last few years have been on ESPN Cable rather than Network ABC/Fox. I never understood that decision.

reminds me of boxing moving all their fights from public availability to pay per view

you make some money in the short to medium term but kill the sport's growth in the general public

The 1st game sucked and people weren't fooled in to thinking this game was going to be different.

LSU vs Oklahoma St would have had great rating

I agree with all of that

There is another long term issue with moving games to cable but the % of people without cable is a lot lower than it once was

this is false. the ratings would have probably been higher than the lsu/bama rematch, but the ratings still wouldnt have been great.

lsu and oklahoma state dont draw the huge national interest and audiences that Texas, USC and ND provide. Die hard football fans will watch any national championship game, fairweather fans need a big name involved.

if Stanford had beaten Oregon the LSU/Stanford game would have gotten amazing ratings IMO

All sorts of story lines to play up that would interest more than SEC fans

Auburn and Oregon don't draw huge national interest either but no one cared because it was a good matchup. Oklahoma St and LSU was a good matchup.

*shrug* Watched the game at a bar in Houston, of which I think maybe 5 other people other than our little crew were Bama or LSU fans. The rest of the bar were just casual observers, and considering it was a Monday night (and we weren't in a "sports bar"), it was pretty crowded.
