I see the Fiesta is still paying premium dollar (18 mil) even though they aren't in this year's rotation. So they are doing some nice funding for teams.

So, how the hell does Boise merit this monster payout? Note, this is 15 million more than either TCU or Baylor will recieve.

A quick breakdown- the BIG bowls give 18 mil; the Orange, Sugar, Rose, and Fiesta. The Championship gives 22 Mil. All the rest are under 5 mil; the Citrus is 4.2 and that is the only one over 4.

Cliff notes
Pt 1- Boise and the Mountain West get 18 million, TCU and Baylor combined get under 8 million.

Pt 2- the SEC, Pac 12, ACC each get 2 payouts of 18 mil, the B1G gets 1, the Big 12 get none.

The top-ranked G5 team got into one of the big bowl games. It was going to be either Boise State or Marshall.

The bowl system does not mix well with the playoffs. Period.

Yep. Putting in the highest ranked small school and having them all bunched on NYE's is them telling you none of the bowls out of the playoff is important.

Oh, ok. Still, (and I don't know the other tie-ins), you'd have thought one of the Big 12 teams would have found a spot. I know we all want to take care of "Cinderella", but that used to be at the expense of one of the big conference runner ups, not over a champ.

What's ironic is that Boise State has had some much better teams that got snubbed by the big bowls.

Those numbers are out of date. Fiesta, Peach, and Cotton are equal bowls in the 6 big bowls now.

quote:

(2) Each of the 10 conferences will also receive a base amount. For conferences that have contracts for their champions to participate in the Orange, Rose or Sugar Bowl, the base combined with the full academic performance pool will be approximately $50 million for each conference. The five conferences that do not have contracts for their champions to participate in the Orange, Rose or Sugar Bowls will receive approximately $75 million in aggregate (full academic pool plus base), which the conferences will distribute as they choose. Notre Dame will receive a payment of $2.3 million if it meets the APR; the other three independents will share $922,658.

(3) A conference will receive $6 million for each team that is selected for the semifinal games. There will be no additional distribution to conferences whose teams qualify for the national championship game. A conference will receive $4 million for each team that plays in a non-playoff bowl under the arrangement (in 2014-2015, the Cotton, Fiesta and Peach Bowls).

(4) Each conference whose team participates in a playoff semifinal, Cotton, Fiesta or Peach Bowl, or in the national championship game will receive $2 million to cover expenses for each game.

Boise made out like a thief today. They renegotiated their re-entry and get 50% of Fiesta bowl monies then the conference shares the rest.

And they shouldn't. I must have been saying for a decade that bowls were not meant to be stepping stones but a reward for a good season.

They also got a similarly favorable deal to receive a larger portion of the Mountain West's TV revenues than the other conference members.

Not that surprising. With 4 teams in the playoffs and a couple more bowls becoming "major" bowls, there's going to be teams that would have gone to a dot com bowl in the past. There's more prime spots.

The Cinderellas generate a lot of publicity and are a more interesting storyline than also-rans in the big conferences. And Boise State has built up a good tradition over the past decade.

Do they just have to be in the top 25? Boise is 21.

No G5 team should get a bowl game over a higher ranked P5 team. Bowls are supposed to be a reward for the season. By automatically giving a bowl bid to the highest ranked g5 team devalues the bowl system. These teams should make their money during the season going on the road to play p5 teams.

First time I've ever used it, but I felt the acronym fit- "sorry if already posted".

Ok. Wow, big difference, now that you consider the Cotton and Peach equal to the Fiesta. I do recall hearing this in the offseason, but had forgotten. I googled for bowl payouts, and the site I had found was the only one on the first 3 pages of the search with ANY numbers.

Still, I see the occasional mention of Boise as a candidate to round out the Big 12, and I wonder if they've done the math and decided they are better off staying out of the Big 5. Seems like they are the odds-on favorite to be the "outside" team every year. If they joined the Big 12, they'd likely drop to mid-level or lower, and lose a lot of money. Money it seems Texas doesn't share equally with the other Big 12 teams; so they have no incentive to join.

Be funny if Boise ends up leveraging themselves as a 12th team (for championship game purposes), and forces equality in the Big 12. Texas might have to cave in, or else the playoffs might be excluding them each season.
