Because it was scored on an error.

Well, obviously I can understand it conceptually. But, the whole point of having earned vs unearned runs is to not punish the pitcher (ERA) for mistakes that are beyond his control. If he commits the error that allows a run to score, it's not a mistake beyond his control. So he gets an E1, which he doesn't care about, and no penalty on his ERA, about which he does care.

Fielders care about errors, pitchers care about ERA. I have witnessed more than one argument in a clubhouse between a pitcher and fielder over a ball being ruled a hit or error.

No, that would absolutely be an earned run.

Well, crap. I guess I was misinformed.

In the words of Rosanne Rosanna Danna....."Nevermind"

That's one way to look at it, but it's also to separate pitching from fielding.

A pitcher making a fielding mistake doesn't mean he pitched poorly, he just committed an error after the fact.

It's all fairly inexact anyway, as an outfielder losing a fly ball in the sun and letting what should be a routine out drop would be considered a hit instead of an error.

Not exactly. The whole point of having earned vs unearned runs is to more accurately reflect how the pitcher "pitched." How the pitcher fielded is a separate measure and treated the same as how other fielders fielded. It makes perfect sense when you separate the measure of pitching from the measure of fielding.

A wild pitch is an earned run, but a passes ball is an unearned run.
