No. This is CFB not the pussy NFL.

Yes. Defender leaves his feet with no intent to wrap up.
Rules about spearing have been on the books for years, but are just starting to be enforced again.

It was his shoulder, but that should still be a penalty. Tackle with your body(wrap up) not just throw yourself at someone.

I agree. There was intent to hurt there. If he would have done that but wrapped him up in the process, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Hurt as in cause pain? Maybe. It helps sometimes to separate the ball from the receiver. Therefore its legal. Plus, if you take out two guys and one of them is your own guy, they should wave off the penalty.

First, he took out two dudes with that hit (even though one was his teammate), so . Second, that should be a penalty.

spearing involves the helmet, right?

No, it isn't. Which is why a penalty was called.

I might be able to get on board with that.

i dunno where the rules are against hits with shoulders and a WR who catches the ball
i don't think any shoulder hit/tackle on a player in the play should be a penalty

As long as his feet are on the ground when his shoulder hits someone then I think it could be different. The hit in question though is a cheap shot at a defenseless receiver. Anytime a defensive player leaves the ground they are acting with the intent to injure the other player.

I disagree. I think launching at another player's head with your shoulder should be a penalty.

I'm not a big fan of these calls, but according to the rule that should have been a penalty.
If you look at the slow-motion replay, starting at :44 seconds, it clearly looks like helmet to helmet.

I won't go this far especially considering goal line and short yardage situations, but I thought they made it pretty clear about the whole 'leaving your feet' deal. It's an awesome hit and one of those 'oooh' moments, but he probably could have made just as an impressive tackle had he remained standing and dropped a shoulder right into his chest and not been flagged.

This.. From the QB angle he may have led with his shoulder, but he did go helmet to helmet

No...I remember that hit. Bad call then, bad call now...the officials were targeting him that year for special treatment. They assumed things because they couldn't see the lightening.

These plays are so tough to judge, it's not really a blatantly dirty hit like it looks at first glance. putting yourself in these safeties' shoes, when you are running full speed right at someone who is running full speed, it's kind of instinctive to just drop your shoulder in his chest, almost bracing yourself for the collision.
not only would it have been kind of awkward to try to wrap someone up running full speed/ head on, but going with the shoulder hit you have a high probability of knocking the ball out, which is part of a safeties job.
i think it's pretty clear looking at the replay at 44 seconds that he's trying to lead with his shoulder, not his head. there is helmet to helmet contact, but he didn't really jump into the guy's head. his right foot is on the ground when they hit, he really launches himself horizontally. the reason these hits result in injury usually, and it happened in this case, is that the receiver naturally ducks his head. the target goes from the center of his chest to his head.

This is leaving your feet and launching with the head
This is a truly dirty hit. significantly different than the one posted in the OP imo.
