Or should he have laid up like a pansie?

Forget that he bet on baseball for now.

Rose bowls over Fosse - VIDEO

45 years and one day ago, Pete Rose bowls over Ray Fosse to win the All-Star game.

IMO, yes he did the right thing. Rose always played to win. And all-star games used to be for real, not for showmanship.

Probably not, but I wouldn't expect Rose to play it any differently

Imagine if the winning league earned homefield advantage back then. Rose would have sliced his fricking head off.

Only people that can answer are guys who played from that era.

If it was like any all star sport events we have today, then it was a dick move. Because a guy going over the middle in the pro bowl doesn't expect to get lit up. If an NBA player hacked a guy to the ground to contest a layup a fight would break out.

Only can know if you know the attitudes of guys on the field in the MLB 1970's. Would those guys answer honestly now?

Pete Rose was, is, and always will be a piece of shite. He took out Ray Fosse in an exhibition game. Then when he had a long hitting streak end he said, "I was a little surprised that in a game that was 16-4, he [Garber] pitched me like it was the seventh game of the World Series. I guess he thought it was Joe DiMaggio up there." Then there was his attempt to take out Bud Harrelson in game 3 of the 1973 NLCS well after Harrelson had thrown the ball to 1st to complete a double play. Harrelson was kicking Rose's arse after the play. And do I need to bring up his attack on Dave Pallone, an umpire he was upset with over a call at 1st base?

Hacking someone going in for a layup in the NBA would be a flagrant foul. What Rose did is not even remotely against the rules.

Fosse should have stepped out of the base path for Pete.

Damn right. The only way to play. Showmanship is the biggest crock in the world. I came to see a great game...not some pansyfoot show.

He probably only did it to win a bet.

Actually, intentionally making contact with a fielder IS illegal. Catcher collisions have always been against the rules, just rarely enforced.

It was a dick move, but it was also 45 years ago. And it also built the legend of Charlie Hustle.

No. MLB Home plate collisions were legal and unaddressed until Long after what Rose did. 2013

Considering he only bet on his team to win then of course he should have! He had money on the line.
