I'm gonna give my post season evaluation of some of the players. Overall i thought it was about what i expected with the exception that if this team would have stayed healthy, they would have been at least a .500 team and would have possibly been in the wild card mix. As we all suspected before the season this is the off season to make some moves and next year will be the year it should all come together. A lot of young players got a bunch of time in and hopefully they should be ready to at least contend for a wild card next year. I know its seems like its said every year but i can honestly say "I think next year is our year"

First off the bright spot all season has been Joey Votto who finished the season on a tear to rank top 5 in 4 major offensive categories.

• Ranks 5th in NL in BA (.322) • Ranks 4th in NL in OBP (.414)
• Ranks 5th in NL in SLG (.567) • Ranks 3rd in NL in OPS (.981)

Homer Bailey has found his swagger. In his last 9 starts he went 6-3 with a 1.70 ERA 53K's to only 23 BB's, that number is outstanding for him.

Jay Bruce had a 2 month stint on the DL thanks to a broken wrist. His defensive play has been great all year long and he has one of the best arms in MLB. His plate discipline was a another story. He struggled at the plate all year before his wrist injury and had to be benched a couple times and watched the game with Baker. Well the broken wrist was a blessing in disguise as he was able to study film and work on his mental game. He hit .326 with an 1.078 OPS in his final 18 games. It will be great to see what he can do over a full season, his AB/HR ratio would have been top 10 in the NL if he would have qualifed with 22 HR's in 345 AB's

This covers pretty much the 3 best prospects the Reds have had for a while and considering to hit this well on two first rounders and a second rounder, its phenomenal. Hopefully this will be the core of a dominant reds team for years to come.

With that said some other vets had great years too.

Bronson Arroyo pretty much gave the other 31 MLB teams a big frick you for not trying to trade for him and has some ridiculous number like 14 consecutive quality starts in the second half. Mad props to the music man.

Phillips had another solid year with 98 RBI's. He led all NL 2B in RBI's and SB. Its nice to get that kind of production from your 2B.

Johnny Gomes had a great year coming off the bench. He was probably one of the best bench guys in MLB this year. He managed 20 HR and 50 RBI's in just 281 AB's. That is awesome.

Cueto started off hot but fizzled as the season went on. He just seemed too burnt out. The great news is he has eclipsed 170IP which kicks in a clause in his contract so he is NOT allowed to pitch in winter ball. Hopefully he will be rested and ready for next year.

Harang is harang. He's gonna eat innings and give you around high 3 low 4 ERA in and out every year. His injuries cut his season a little short but he was having a decent year not winning games.

Volquez. For him it became pretty evident after the elbow evaluation that it was bothering him all year long. Not sure when he will be back next season but hopefully he will be stronger.

Micah Owings. His .808 OPS puts him 3rd on the team with anyone over 50 AB's. So he knows when, i mean if this pitching thing doesn't work out he can always hit. This stat defines Owings

April ERA 3.78
May ERA 5.68
June ERA 3.72
July ERA 8.53
August ERA 6.43 (only 7IP)
Sept ERA 1.23

Mr. Inconsistency.

They had a better record than the Mets. I hang my head.

Mets announced they are changing the 1st base coach and the Bench coach.

Yeah it was their fault.

I think the play and leadership of Scott Rolen over the final two months of the season was the most noteworthy thing of the entire season. The players respond to him, and the defense is SOOOOO much better with him and Janish on the left side.

The biggest questions in my mind are:
1. Can Janish play SS full time? His glove says yes, but his bat says meh.
2. Are they gonna pay Taveras 4 million to ride the bench? Drew Stubbs is going to bat leadoff and play CF next year, no doubt in my mind.
3. Who's going to be the #5 starter behind Arroyo, Cueto, Bailey, and Harang. You can't count on anything until at least August from Volquez.
4. Do they dare try to trade Cordero for help at either SS or SP? I think it's maybe worth a shot. I think Masset is going to be a good closer once he's given the chance.

I think we can easily find a # 5 starter on the market no problem.

SS if you are gonna do it, but it was so nice to have a solid bullpen this year. But SS is a position that needs to be addressed. NOW.

The bullpen shouldn't be touched. It's been one of the best in the league the past couple of years.

dont get me wrong they had a great year, but Cordero & Lincoln turn 35, Rhodes turns 40.

I would just like to add someone to go with Herrera & Masset. Not Kip Wells

If anyone would take Cordero's salary I'd trade him, but I'm happy to have him back next year. He is the only high salary guy I can see being moved. The Reds should be an excellent defensive team next year, especially if Janish is the SS. The biggest reason I can't be too excited about 2010 is Baker, who I think is an awful decision maker. He can't make lineups or insert the correct players. Taveres could still be a problem next year with him at the helm. I'd love to see him bat Rolen second, where he is a great fit as a high OBP, low power guy at this point in his career

Well, I guess that was deserved. But relax - it's just a discussion board.

Listen, I'm not a Reds fan, but have always enjoyed their teams.
Always been a huge fan of Charlie Hustle, Larkin, Eric Davis, Sabo, etc.
Wish them nothing but the best in 2010 - seriously.

Obviously Id love to see Janish get the gig full time and let him grow into it,,Defensively I doubt you can upgrade, I think he would be a fine #7 #8 hitter and givin enough time can become better.

guys a gamer thats for sure

I'm sure you're more than aware, but FWIW:

Late surge is no prelude, but it's promising - Cincinnati Enquirer (10/3/09):

Reds bests and worsts
- MVP: Brandon Phillips. You've got to give him the nod over Joey Votto, although Votto's average, on-base and slugging percentages are superior. Phillips reached 20 home runs, 20 steals and 20 doubles for the third straight year. He has driven in a career-high 95 runs. He's also the club's best defender. And he's played 151 games. There's great value in durability in baseball.
- Cy Young: Bronson Arroyo. He went 15-13 with a 3.84 ERA going into today's final start. He ended the season with one of the best streaks of consistency over the last 20 years.
- Rookie of the year: Ryan Hanigan. He was solid at the plate - .268 average, .306 on-base - and behind the plate. Very hard call. Daniel Ray Herrera had a nice year (4-4, 3.06 ERA), and the Reds have a been a different and better team since Drew Stubbs came up.
- Biggest disappointment: Willy Taveras. The Reds hoped he would help the offense from the leadoff spot. He didn't hit (.240), didn't get on base (.275) and didn't steal like he had in the past (25 stolen bases). His defense also was disappointing. Bad breaks on the ball negated his great speed.
- Biggest surprise: Jonny Gomes. Gomes came off a year in which he hit .183. He hit .266 with 20 home runs and 50 RBI in only 278 at-bats. He was solid in the outfield and is good in the clubhouse.

Five questions going into next season
- Who plays shortstop? Paul Janish is first-rate defensively. But his average has hovered around .220. His 21 doubles in 250 at-bats are a good sign.
- Who plays left field? The list of candidates is long: Jonny Gomes, Wladimir Balentien, Juan Francisco, Chris Heisey and Laynce Nix. Gomes and Nix are arbitration eligible. The Reds have to make a decision on them.
- What to do with Willy? Taveras has lost his center field job to Stubbs. Taveras doesn't fit the mold of a bench player. He has little power. But there's the matter of his $4 million contract.
- Who's the fifth starter? Matt Maloney is probably the leader in the clubhouse. Justin Lehr also will get consideration, if the Reds bring him back. Travis Wood, like Maloney a left-hander, had a tremendous year in the minors.
- Who's going to be the pitching coach? Getting Dave Duncan would be a coup. But he's expensive and will be in great demand if he leaves St. Louis. Mario Soto is an intriguing internal candidate. The question is: Does he want the job?
