quote:

3. ELI APPLE, Ohio State (6-0 ½, 202, 4.39, 1): Third-year sophomore from Voorhees, N.J. "He got beat probably more than you want but he's got tremendous upside," said one scout. "He is too young (20) to be coming out but he is so you've got to project what he's going to be. I think he's going to be a pretty high-level starter." Started 27 games, finishing with 86 tackles (7 ½ for loss), 4 picks and 18 PBUs. "Some there (OSU) were worried he wouldn't break 4.6 and then popped the (4.39)," said another scout. "They were surprised he ran that well. I worry about him because of off-the-field issues. The kid has no life skills. At all. Can't cook. Just a baby. He's not first round for me. He scares me to death." Wonderlic was 21. "He probably has as much talent as anybody but he, like a lot of those Ohio State guys, is inconsistent," said a third scout. "He squats, and receivers run by him. He's more in catch-up mode than reaction mode. He bothers me a little bit."

Now with Joey Bosa eval:

“Little bit of a loose cannon,” said a third scout. “I’ll call him a meathead. He also likes to go out and have a good time. Hell of a player. Plays hard.” Father, John, was a bust (seven sacks in three seasons) as a DE drafted with the 16th pick by Miami in 1987. “I did his father and he was kind of a stiff, straight-line guy,” said another scout. “This guy must have got the mom’s flexibility or something."

Silly. He can pay someone to cook for him in about a week or so.

Also, it can be said that being able to cook is a sign of maturity and being able to take care of yourself. How is this guy going to be able to live an adult life in the NFL if he can't even make himself breakfast, lunch, and dinner?

Yea this is the point.

I would say only 50% of people who leave college at 22 really know how to fend for themselves, cook, clean etc. He's leaving at 20, and sounds like he acts like a kid. He never had any REAL off the field issues like other players

OP, you are taking this out of context.

Scout says that he has no life skills and provided an example. He didn't elaborate on 'cook', but maybe the dude can't even fix a can of soup on the stove. I don't consider this a red flag, but I don't have a problem with a scout who does.

Yeah, I mean, I'm sure that he will probably turn out fine where he ends up. I'm just saying that the scout's comments are a legitimate criticism in my eyes.

Agreed, but I also don't see that as "off-the-field issues" like the scout says. Off field issues to me are drugs/drinking/arrests etc

I think it's a legitimate flag. I don't understand why people think this is silly.

They aren't saying that they wouldn't draft him because of it. But it is a "red flag" or cause for concern. It shows he isn't mature and not really an adult. So there is some reason to worry about investing millions of dollars into a guy like that.

this

its kind of a problem to have no life skills at that age.

if he cant so much as make a meal how can he be expected to handle life as a pro?

They are talking about a 20 year old kid here. How many 20 year old males can cook their own dinner every night?

And I'm not talking about opening up a can of chunky soup and putting it in the microwave or heating up some hot pockets or frozen dinners.

I'm talking about knowing how to cook a variety of meals.

I would say very few 20 year old males know how to do that.

That's ridiculous.

I'm willing to bet the scout does not mean this

quote:

opening up a can of chunky soup and putting it in the microwave or heating up some hot pockets or frozen dinners.

and is more likely talking about this.

its not hard to make something spaghetti or other random easy meals and its not likely the scout would mention an inability to cook if the kid could do those most basic things.

But that's not even cooking. It's putting a box into the microwave and putting a timer on.

There is no way he doesn't know how to do that.

If you're 20 and can't make shitty spaghetti then you've got bigger issues than maturity

Boil water
Put noodles in boiling water
Take noodles out

Open spaghetti sauce
Warm sauce
pour spaghetti sauce on noodles

optional : add grated parmesan
optional : toast a single piece of bread
