lol wut

you literally must not have listened.

This is where I defend my stance and say I've been listening since is was Tirico and Van Pelt!!

Kanell is your run of the mill, dime a dozen former athlete turned talking head at ESPN. He brings nothing to the table. He's in the same vein as David pollack, booger, etc. RR is a guy better suited to play 2nd fiddle to a guy who can actually carry a show. Most of his bits since SVP departed fall flat, some are just awkward at times. I do a lot of driving and have listened to a lot of radio shows -- DK and RR wasn't a good show to me

Good thing that you're an expert.

I'm no longer upset that they fired Kanell after reading your post.

BTW, Jeff Saturday would be a GREAT replacement.

Russillo often refers to his entire tenure at espn and not just since it became R&K when he discusses "the show". When danny would want to try something that ryen thought was dumb, he would say something like, "well I've been doing this show for a while..." or "I've been in this spot for a long time...". He definitely sees svp show, svp & russillo, and russillo & kannell as more of one long running show that has had title changes.

He stated a few months ago on the sports illustrated media podcast that he was given nearly free rein to choose the co-host after svp left. He said that he believed college football coverage was the best/most important thing that "the show" does well. That's why he thought it was crucial to have a college football guy in there with him. It was really between kannell and peter rosenberg for the spot. He said he felt like he had to make the phone call to rosenberg and explain that kannell was the guy for the reasons stated.

He also said adnan was never really a candidate. He has too many tv responsibilities and that side of espn wouldn't let him do it.

I love Russillo and I love Barstool but they are not a good fit together at all. He'll either have rotating co-hosts or pick a new one soon enough. After that we'll see if ESPN has a legitimate competitor for him to jump to.

My first reaction was that they're just naming the show The Rusillo Show until they figure out who they're gonna add

But then I figured espn would have had some sort of plan in place before they fired everyone. So who knows

I'm surprised Kanell was one of the casualties. I don't know what he made but I can't imagine it was a salary issue. I don't really understand the rationale behind his firing.

Danny grew on me a lot from when I first heard he would be the new co-host. I was not optimistic. And he didn't start out well so I thought it was doomed. But he got a lot better. The guy really isn't built for radio but he and Ryen were really starting to complement each other well and Danny was starting to come into his own as the kind of always optimistic good old boy as opposed to Ryen's more thoughtful, calculated approach. He had cooled off with all the half-hearted, seemingly fake troll attempts and was becoming a pretty charming and likable radio dude. Another thing is you could tell they actually like each other.

I don't get all the love for Adnan. He's ok as a fill in but I can only take so much of him. Rosenberg would be cool maybe but that will never happen. I'm curious to see which direction they go with the new co-host, assuming they go that route. Ryen is great at what he does, but he's not a one man show kind of radio personality.

This right here. I never understood the love for Adnan. His shtick is a goofy Canadian that has a weird laugh who like movies, baseball, and hockey. He's ok during guest hosting roles, but he CANNOT be the permanent replacement. Back in '15 I was rooting for Danny or Rosenberg to get the gig.

The only problem with Peter is that he doesn't know much about CFB, the show's backbone

God damnit.

He's not nearly as good by himself.

It's borderline impossible to do a successful sports talkshow by yourself. It's just so damn difficult to banter to yourself for hours.

Adnan is a smooth talker and usually gives informed opinions, not hot takes. RR is a little more aggressive, they compliment each other well.

Just finished reading this thread. The whole "he should leave ESPN because that's what Patrick & Cowherd accomplished" angle is a pipe dream. He's really not as interesting without a certain kind of co-host.

I think it would be good for his show to go through a number of guest and see who is good for his show.

You're totally underestimating how many people reluctantly gave espn ratings to listen to their show.
Not really, I'm just basing it off of a history of many guys leaving ESPN and getting jobs elsewhere and none of us even knowing about it.

It's not like I'm saying anything controversial, just that he has more exposure with ESPN than he would having a podcast on Barstool. I feel like that's basically obvious, but seem to be getting pushback on it for some odd reason.

I'll still listen to russillo probably but would 100% go out of my way to tune in to him wherever he ended up.
That's fine, and i'm sure you're not the only one, but let's not act like he commands and will bring an entire bug audience that will move the ratings needle over to some place if he leaves, there's no chance of that happening.

That's actually a great point. He's the Paul George of radio shows, he's solid, but if he's your #1 guy, you're not getting over that hump to elite status.

I agree, he would be a good #2 guy.

Sbnation makes more sense. Since they have a national radio footprint

I'd imagine he rather stay at ESPN since no matter what, it is still the biggest company in sports media

RR said last wk that he would open today's show with an explanation of what the future of his show will be. He said that the comment bout his getting a reduced role was BS put out there "by an agency trying to improve its own client/s"

I don't hate Adnan, but his opinions on sports besides baseball and hockey are anything but informed. He's a very good Sportscenter anchor and that doesn't usually translate well to radio. Scott Van Pelt was the exception when he was still doing radio. What Adnan provides are your typical run of the mill thoughts that you usually hear on a quick Sportscenter hit from a random talking head. Very safe. Thoughtful and smart-sounding, but not provocative or unique in the least.

Going from ESPN to where Sean Salisbury is buried is anything but a good move.
