Yeah props to the ad for making this move. Great hire also considering the time of the year.

Great hire for Illinois. They are the single most underachieving school in the B1G. 12+ Million people in Illinois alone. They should be at least a top 25 program. He will bring them instant credibility for recruiting. It cant be any worse. Solid get for the B1G conference.

er Illinois, Lovie Smith has a 6-year contract worth $2M in 2016-17, $3M in 2018, $4M in 2019 and $5M for 2020-21.

2+2+3+4+5+5= 21 million for Love Smith in the college game. Dude just failed upwards big time.

I hope they have the funds to fire him after year 3. His defense is as archaic as his offensive philosophy. Poor illini fans.

The university will pay (interim head coach) Cubit $985,000 as part of a buyout and also owe fired athletic director Mike Thomas $2.5 million for the remainder of his contract, which ran through 2019.

You guys realize the boosters involved with Illinois right? One is just an owner of a NFL franchise worth just shy of $5 billion.

No one is knocking Illinois football here. Most posts here have been very supportive. And I think most, like myself, are hopeful for a rejuvenation of the Illini.

That said, it's a big deal when school shells out the money Illinois has and will spend for on a sport that hasn't been winning lately.

Oh I agree. The boosters have the money, but just haven't acted like a big time program. This is the first step in something that has been a long time coming.

I have. They'll go from a little offense and no defense to having neither. This will be Charlie Weis-Kansas, The Stache at Pitt or Callahan-Neb bad.

His first step should be to bring back their old logo. It's cool as hell.

what matters is how many good football players there are, not how many people live there. basketball is king in Illinois.

Massachusetts has a similar population to Ilinois and even fewer 4 star football players.
They have 4 star hockey players though.
