A lot of MLB players are signing away free agent years on extensions that aren't very large

If you don't whitelist it.

Eh, I'm not the biggest fan of it, but I get it. Ads pay bills for these companies now that print media has gone the way of the CD, 8-track, etc. I can't be too upset that they are just trying to make top $.

Odor did the same thing that Andrus and Martin Perez did.

All three are from Venezuela and are using the money to get their families out of that hell-hole.

Even Robinson Chirinos (another Venezuelan) just signed a two-year extension.

Andrus got 120 mil. Odor got less than half. I understand its life changing money and they have family to take care of but these guys are losing money on the back end of these deals. MLBPA needs to try to change the system so that less guys sign pre-arb deal

What does Andrus have to do with Odor? They were in two completely different situations regarding service time... and it's not remotely close.

Odor will also enter free agency while in his prime. This isn't one of those Andrew McCutchen type raw deals either given his age. Win win for everyone here. There are "experts" who feel the Rangers should not have done this given the flaws in Odor's game that may or may not catch up to him.

Both of them (along with Martin Perez) signed long-term deals and essentially the teams bought out the arbitration years at team-friendly prices.

Also all three wanted the money to get their families out of the hell-hole that is Venezuela. Elvis has moved his family up here (I believe that's the case, and I don't know about Perez) and now Odor plans to do the same.

Just curious as a Rangers fan, what are the flaws that may catch up to him that you speak of?

It's a security trade off. Security against injury and security against the player not improving. Odor needs to be a lot better before he gets a contract in free agency was a lot more than this.
look at Singleton: minor-league production with a major league salary.

Plate discipline is one. He swings at a lot of marginal pitches and has a low walk rate.

Fielding is the other, though he has great range (top5 in plays made outside his "zone") he has a lower conversion on "routine plays" than the top second basemen in the league.

The guy is still ridiculously young and a really good ball player, but has the same issues as Elvis. They are both good hitters (Rougie does have more power) but lack plate discipline. They both have great range, but convert less routine plays than one would like to see out of franchise middle infielders. Crazy enough fielding wise the Rangers have one of the worst middle infields in the league, but they also are the best combo for double plays.

Plate discipline and converting routine plays, if he can do that then he will have a long career. If he can't then he will still play for a while, but will never reach the potential he has with his power and range.

Elvis is coming off of a .300+ season and his best defensive year of his career following the biggest meltdown of his career on a national stage. Not that he can't improve, but that's being a bit nitpicky w/ him.

Odor has work to do w/ working counts also w/ his footwork in the field, but he'll be fine.

Heard the Ranger baws talking on the radio and apparently from what they've heard from Perez and other Venezuleans is that the first contract is to set their families and not themselves. Odor has been providing for I believe they said 7 family members over the last several years back in South America. Now, they have nothing to worry about financially.

Correct. They either plan to help them financially during the turmoil or get them out of there to someplace safer (Odor plans to move his parents and younger sister to his new horse ranch in north Texas once he gets it set up).

The political instability in Venezuela is driving their decisions (even Chirinos took a small two-year extension--he is also from there). The Rangers benefit by not having more large contracts that could turn sour (they have enough large bad contracts with Prince, Choo, their share of Hamilton, and now Darvish and Hamels are looking like bad ones too).

Oh, understandable.

What????
They pay Hamilton pennies on the dollar, Darvish is HELLA cheap for a pitcher of his caliber per year and Hamels has been stupendous for his price tag.

They both did fall apart at the end of last season, but to say that the Rangers haven't gotten tremendous value out of either of them is ridiculous. And they aren't paying Hambone hardly anything, the Angels are still carrying that price tag.

Odor has family in New Orleans, too.
His uncle played at UNO in the 1980s/90s, and works in the Indians organization. The family lives here. He and his son are Rouglas Odor.

He used Andrus' 120 million extension as a comparison to how Odor is getting such a raw deal. Apples to oranges but of course you'd make sense out of it.

225 - Awesome Sauce pretty much covered it.
