We all know Pete is headed to Seattle! If you were a minority coach would you interview with Seattle knowing there's no way in hell you will get the job

It is a ridiculous rule that helps noone at this point. Teams always have a short list of guys. Why would a black coach waste their time and travel across the country when you know Carrol has the job.

But what is worse is making a team lie and say the job is wide open when they have their guy sewn up. Then going through the motions and getting the hopes up of coaches who then would think they legitimately have a shot.

It is getting better. Just LET IT get better. Trying to manufacture equality just sets everything back.

I think to get anywhere in the NFL Coaching Circles you have to contribute to the "dog and pony show".

The owners are a very small circle of people who cooperate with one another for the most part. If a coach is tagged as a rebel or uncooperative then their future and promotability will take a hit. If they are known to be "cooperative" with the process then they will be in the ballgame.

Token or not, if I was a coach in the NFL wanting to be promoted I would interview anytime it was offered.

Is the the most ridiculous rule ever. It does nothing but further enhance the negative stereotypes of minorities. Was Indianapolis required to interview white candidates when they hired Caldwell?

Yeah, this is the general idea. For example, I don't think Mike Tomlin was really on anybody's radar for an immediate head coaching gig (although he was clearly on the path towards becoming a HC). When the Steelers interviewed him, they were blown away by his preparedness, ideas and coaching philosophy.

So while the rule is pretty stupid when an organization already has "its guy" (i.e., Pete Carroll or Steve Mariuchi to the Lions, etc.) or when an organization needs to act quick to get who they want.

I guess its how you look at it. Let's say the Minnesota coach interviewed knowing he would not get the job but came in well-prepared and blew the owner away.

Next year another owner has a head coach opening and the Seattle owner recommends the Minnesota Coach to him based on his strong interview. The "token interview" down the road may open a door that may not have opened later based on his effectiveness in the token interview.

It is a privelege to be interviewed for these elite and high paying jobs at any point. If handled effectively by the coach it can become a stepping stone to bigger things. If not handled effectively it can keep you from getting those opportunitites later.

i hate the rule.. but yeah they also say by interviewing for a HC job.. the coach still gets his name out in the public.. so it can still help.

As a minority who has coached high school football and college basketball, the Rooney Rule has been more positive than any of you could imagine, especially if you are thinking outside of the box.

1. I have interviewed for several jobs. Some I knew I was going to get an offer and some I knew I had no shot.

2. In each situation, I learned something about the interview process.
*You learn about the types of questions you need to be prepared for in the future.
*You meet the decision makers and you learn what different organizations are looking for in regards to leadership.
*You get to learn how to identify if a situation is stable or if they things are going to continue to move in a negative direction.

I can go on with this list.

3. In the NFL, there are 32 jobs. Frazier from MN will be an NFL Head Coach. In my circle of friends who have spent some time in the NFL, (Short and Long term) NFL stands for Not For Long. So what he doesn't get the job, how long do these guys stay at a job? Hell Mora was given one year at Seattle. Mangini barely kept his job this season. How long did Jim Zorn last?
My point is this, if he makes a great impression during the interview, it will stick with the people who are interviewing him. The GMs, Football Operations people, and VPS move around just like coaches and they keep track of relationships built in their journeys.

Hopefully, this will enlighten some of you on why a Rooney Rule has been helpful to minority coaches. Is it perfect, no, but if these guys take these interviews seriously, it will help them when a legitimate opportunity does arise.

Mike Tomlin of the Steelers was interviewed and hired due to the Rooney Rule. Sure, a good majority of the time the rule wastes both parties time but sometimes it opens up the eyes of the employer. That's all it's meant to do. Steelers' ownership has since stated that they would have never interviewed Tomlin had it not been for the rule as well.

Won't matter, Paul Allen is one of the richest men in the world......I hope he just skips the damn process and doubled the fine for charity sake.

When more than 75% of the league consists of black players, I think it is baseless to have a rule which requires a team to do anything regarding "minority" hiring. I think the NFL has hired more than its fair share of minorities - and frankly I believe that an NFL owner will hire whoever it takes to win whether white or black. I sincerely doubt NFL owners give two shits about whether their coach is black or white as long as he wins.

a good example of a guy who failed at this was sherm lewis about a decade ago

he was the hot WC assistant who was on his way to being a head coach

he didn't interview enough for jobs he wasn't going to get and his stock flamed out quickly

now he doesn't even have a consistent job as a positional coach. he was brought in as the offensive consultant for the skins this year

IMO There should be a Rooney Rule for drafting white players in the NFL. Who knows how many white athletes werent given a chance to play in the NFL just because they were white. Whats the difference? Toby Gerhart imo is a tough, hardnosed badass, but he will probably be asked to play FB or TE....all because of stereotypes. Its insulting. frick the Rooney Rule!!!!
