Long time Texas HS coach and Coached Tech into relevancy
Also attended Rice for one year in the 1950's but left after a year because as he said, 'Rice did not offer the academic challenge for which I was seeking, so I transferred to San Angelo Junior College.'

Well, this bums me out. My dad was based at Reese when Spike coached at Tech and they did some public affairs stuff together.
I was probably 5 years old when Spike walked me down the tunnel and onto the field at Jones Stadium one spring. It was like my introduction to college football.

Spike had some talent come through Lubbock. SWC Champs in 1994 I believe, thanks to aggy probation.
Byron Hanspard and Zebbie Lethridge could wreck.

That's a name I haven't heard in a long time.
He had solid players, but never enough of them. It seemed like they always found a way to lose 5 games. They managed to give RC Slocum fits in Lubbock though.

Spike also made the rounds coaching high school in Texas. He's legendary status down here. First ever Big 12 Coach of the Year.

Spike in the old SWC went from 5th to 4th...And then to four years in a row 2nd.
But right after his best season(9-3), the SWC became the Big12.
And just too many good teams...And Oklahoma and Nebraska dominated. He was always above .500 though...When TTs history was below .500.
And he got fired. Leach didn't inherit a dumpster fire like Gary Barnett at NW...And Spike kept TT afloat in the new Big12.

Zebbie Lethridge was such as awesome name. Bam Morris was a sledgehammer RB that racked up a ton of yards.

They weren't sub .500 before he got there. Their overall record was 344-283-31.

Was a Darrell Royal assistant at Texas from 1972-76.
Coached with Fred Akers and David McWilliams (oddly enough) while in Austin.
