What about RG III justifies the claim of "higher upside"?
Posted on 8/24/14 at 8:15 pm to roygu
He's terrible! If he can't run around, which he no longer can, he's done. His style of play has never been sustained in the NFL. Period end of story.

"It's not that I want to see RGIII fail. Since day one, this guy has been shoved in our face by sports media and overhyped him so much. His career has been on a fast decline."
Agreed, why should I pull for him to make it big? What makes him deserve it? You can give me the "nice guy" crap all day but look how many people wanted Tebow to fail. The fact of the matter is that until QB scouts stop using 40 times to evaluate prospects, QBs will continue to be over-hyped. Luck was highly regarded because of his mental capacity to play the position; then you add a pretty dang good 40 and good arm strength and athleticism. It starts with the head first.

Terrible argument.

I've watched Russell Wilson this preseason, and he's on a whole other level than Kaep or RG3. He plays so smart.
Even if you could get RG3 playing well again, I honestly don't know if his body is going to hold up much longer. I don't know if he's going to make it past year 5.

How is that? All you hear in media is how much "potential" a QB has because of his 40. How many sub 4.6 qbs are in the hall of fame or have won a Superbowl. Try ZERO.

Russell Wilson.

They play with their heads first, legs second. And having the best defense since the 2000 ravens doesn't hurt Russell Wilson either. He's not asked to do a whole lot. Look at his yardage compared to other qbs considered top 10.

Well now you're just backtracking.
ETA: What made you pick sub 4.6?

Not back tracking, just looked and saw Wilson ran a 4.55, thought he was a 4.6. The point is Trent Dilfer won a Superbowl with a defense like that. Wilsn is better than Dilfer but it isn't because he ran a 4.55, its because he's a smart player.

quote:Yes you are. The question went from "sub 4.6 QBs" to "sub 4.6 QBs that are run-first QBs or aren't run-first QBs but have bad to average defenses."
Not back tracking
The league is starting to get more and more athletic QBs. Wilson ran sub 4.6. Kaepernick ran sub 4.6. Andrew Luck ran 4.67. Rodgers ran 4.71. I think all of those QBs will either get into the hall or win a SB.
I guess the point you're trying to make, although going about it in a weird way, is that run-first QBs have not been successful in the NFL in the past and will not in the future, which I agree with. I wouldn't focus so much on their 40 times, moreso on their playing style.

I'd be willing to bet both Steve Young and John Elway were capable of running 4.6s

You act like the ability to run is keeping these QBs from being great. Defensive coordinators aren't watching tape of Kaepernick and going "YES! If only we can get him running out of the pocket!"

It's a failure both on his part and the organization. They've enabled this kid's sense of entitlement since he came there. Why would he put in the work to significantly improve when they're just going to hand him the spot regardless of how well Cousins is playing. Cousins should be starting but that organization is too arsebackwards to make the move.

No hating. Cousins is clearly the better QB. This is indisputable.

I'm not saying their ability to run is keeping them from being great, I'm saying its a crutch. Their is two possibilities to an athletic QB not being good.
1. Athleticism is a crutch, like a great athlete in basketball not learning the basics because he can jump really high and dunk it.
2. Made it this far with athleticism and doesn't have the mental ability to play at the highest level required for the position (Jamarcus Russell). And the reason I said 4.6 is because anything below that to me for a QB is pretty much elite speed. 4.6 to 4.75ish is very good QB speed, just not elite.
