i know he was a 20's pick but he might very well be the worst first round draft pick of all time

Demetrius Underwood would beg to disagree. That guy was full-on bipolar. Tried to kill himself twice while under contract, once by slashing his neck and again by running into a busy highway.

If you're showing up to an NFL practice drunk you've got serious issues

The NFL Hall of Fame is full of quarterbacks and other players that did just this thing.

Only in the last 10-20 years did it become a big deal that grown men like to get fricked up. What was typical macho or "real man" behavior is now a problem to be solved.

I'm not saying Manziel doesn't have a legitimate problem. I don't know the man personally.

However, I'm not so much of a hypocrite as to apply a standard of behavior to one generation that was not applied to men of the past generations in the same profession.

Which happens to coincide with the rise of 24/7 coverage of sports and the athletes lives. Gotta report something to fill all that air time. The media coverage has helped fund the enormous rise in sports revenue and salaries but it comes at a price - everything is under a microscope. Johnny Manziel cannot go to Vegas and act a fool and expect no one to notice.

Well back in the day we didn't have as much information on addiction and addictive personalities as we do today.

The behavior Manziel is exhibiting seems to go far beyond just having a good time. When you're willing to flush your career down the toilet because you can't stop drinking, yeah that's an obvious problem.

I put about as much credence in these studies as I do in the studies that tout the modern "rape culture" in the US. The people doing the study have a vested interest in maintaining the fiction that "addiction" is a lifelong struggle that can never be overcome or outgrown. Given the amount of money that the drug and alcohol treatment industry funnels into law enforcement and the number of involuntary patients law enforcement funnels into the drug and alcohol treatment industry, I don't see the situation changing, and that is unfortunate.
