Speaking for a story on the his team’s website, Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti is not a fan of multiple commercial breaks that slow down the game action in particular, the touchdown/field goal, break, kickoff, break that occurs regularly.

Bisciotti had some choice words for that entire sequence:

“It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that nobody wants to see two minutes of commercials, come back, kick the ball and then go to a minute-and-a-half of commercials,” Bisciotti said Tuesday. “I’ve thought that was absurd since I was 20 years old.”

Bisciotti was quite candid, first wondering if this was a industry-wide problem with ratings down across the board for all programs, not just the NFL, but then turned back to the amount of commercials in a game broadcast and income that trickles down to the players:

“We’ve got to figure that out,” Bisciotti said. “Again, if you change that, it could mean a reduction in income, but that’s going to hit the players more significantly than it’s going to hit the owners. I still don’t know any owner that’s in this business because of the money.

“Everything is on the table, and if we have to go to ABC and NBC and say that we’ve got to cut some commercials out and give some money back and half of that money doesn’t go into the player pool, maybe that’s what we’re going to have to do. But our expenses would be adjusted accordingly too. So, I’d like to see some things cleaned up.”

that's not what he really said

He actually said "oh sure we will get rid of those pesky commercials for you! I'll just cut some of the player paychecks in half!"

Knowing that will never be agreed to

it is pretty stupid to go to a commercial right after a TD and only come back for a kick return only to return back to a commercial again

If the ratings continue to drop (regular season viewership was definitely down in 2016), then the network contract renewals will reflect a drop in revenue anyway.

Since some reference excessive commercials as a reason not to watch, it might behoove them to fix this now...

What a martyr. He's 100 percent spot on, but they won't change it. They'll just make up more rules where the clock runs continuously. College football experimented with some rules like that back in 2006(?). It resulted in something like 20 less plays a game. Hurt the product so they changed some of them back.

Oh, no doubt. But eventually something will have to be done. I expect them to struggle with ratings again next year. The cowboys being so good helped the league tremendously this year.

Weird that he mentions abc considering they haven't broadcasted an NFL game in years, and their sister station only has one per week.

Reduce ad time and increase price. It's the NFL; they'll fill up the ad space

Tell that to the SEC and CBS.

Here's a question for the board:

Would you prefer things stay the way that they are, or fewer commercials with companies advertising on the jerseys like they do in Soccer?

As many know, there aren't commercials in soccer but everyone's uniform is sponsored. It's the most watched sport in the world

It's pretty smart.

$$$$$

NFL has always been squeezing the buck...from the early days of their TV deals.

They took a game that would take 1.5 hours and broke it down into advertising opportunities...to make it now 4 hours.

NFL has always been ahead of the curve...over baseball, basketball, etc.

Basically if the NFL was in charge of of Tennis, there would be a commercial break after every game point...and a TV timeout at Deuce. Soccer would have a TV timeout after ever shot on goal.

I'm definitely not a fan of the crazy number of commercial breaks, and it's one of my biggest criticisms of the NFL and CFB, but NFL games don't run for 4 hours in my experience. Not even close actually.

Here is what irks my arse:

Player gets injured.

Trainers come out.

Trainers tend to player for 1 minute or so while the commentators talk about the replay of the injury.

Player is walking off the field.

TV THEN DECIDES TO GO TO A COMMERCIAL.

I'm a soccer fan, but I don't want to see shirt sponsors in the NFL or CFB. There are ways to do continuous ads on the TV feed, though, that could preclude some of the commercials.

Soccer also has the advertising hoardings around the pitch, but those would be destroyed for American football especially in the NFL before the end of the first quarter.
