It’s hard to talk about the 2016 Cubs without descending into what can only be called baseball stat porn. The numbers that surround this team range from the astonishing to the unbelievable. Here is the simplest way to sum up how good this team is with facts that should be mutually exclusive:
1. The 2016 Chicago Cubs are on pace to challenge the all-time record for victories in a season.
2. They are underachieving.
quote:
By comparison, they’ve won 27 games by three runs or more. That 27–4 mark in such contests is staggering and would easily eclipse the modern major league record if it held:
quote:
They’ve scored 297 runs and allowed 156, giving them a ratio that would be the best in modern major league history:
quote:
The Cubs have drawn 250 walks in 55 games, an average of 4.55 walks per game. The average NL team has drawn just 3.23 walks per game, meaning the Cubs are on pace to draw 213 more walks than a league-average team. That would be, easily, a National League record
quote:
The Cubs have used only five starting pitchers all season, and all five starters have an ERA under 3. In fact, of the 11 pitchers who have thrown at least 10 innings for Chicago this year, Justin Grimm (3.48) is the only one with an ERA over 3. The team ERA as a whole is 2.57, which is, well, nuts. The Cubs are on pace to allow 459 runs; the only team of the live-ball era to allow fewer runs per game is the 1972 Orioles.
quote:
Factor in home-field advantage and the Cubs basically have a 50–50 shot of reaching the World Series for the first time in 71 years.

They are by far the best team in baseball.
Which will obviously make it all the more hilarious when they don't win the World Series.

They sure are doing an excellent job of putting an unreal amount of pressure on themselves to end the title drought.
Trolls will be lined up across the country if they don't finish this off.

Why would that be hilarious, tho? Being the best team all season does not guarantee you a title.

Playoffs are a crap shoot. Most people recognize this. Those finding it hilarious if the much more likely scenario of the cubs not winning the ws over the less likely scenario that they do are just bafoons.

You have to love articles like this.
It's early.

It's not that early to where you can really point to small sample size. Team is historically good.
Posted on 6/7/16 at 12:28 pm to NFLU
It's early but man the Cubs are clearly the best team at this point. They would have to do a complete 180 in the other direction at this point.

You know exactly why it would be funny
Posted on 6/7/16 at 1:10 pm to hendersonshands
Exactly. I wouldn't be talking shite about how they were the best team and didn't win. That could easily happen and often does. I'd still think it was funny as shite.
Cubs fans are very sensitive about this, obviously.

How often does the best team win the world series? 60% maybe? 70%?
Posted on 6/7/16 at 1:15 pm to rockchlkjayhku11
I know I don't want to face the Mets pitching staff in the playoffs.

They have the best record over the first 56 games of a season since the 2001 Mariners who started the season 44-12. Interesting enough, the 2002 Red Sox started the season 39-17 and they ended up missing the playoffs that year. The Red Sox later fired their GM Dan Duquette after the season and hired Theo to take his place.

Impressive that they have lost 4 games in which they've won by 3 or more runs

People continue to miss the point on the Cubs. Not winning a world series is irrelevant. You're talking about a team that has only made the postseason 15 times since they last won a world series in 1908.
The Cubs were lovable losers not because they fell short but because they were historically inept. They never fell short because they never got there. The story is the Cubs contending year over year, not them winning a world series.

Yeah, it was out of context in the article. The previous paragraph described the Cubs losing close and listed 4 games they lost by more than 3 runs.

The Cubs have lost four games all season by three runs or more.

That's wonderful. The story is the Cubs finally are building something, not selling out on past their prime free agents that cripple the franchise.
People defining the Cubs success as "have to win the world series" don't understand the Cubs. If the Cubs made the playoffs this year, it would be only the third time they've made it in back to back years in franchise history. The Cubs winning a pennant hasn't happened in over 70 years. There is plenty of history to be made for this team.
