Raiders, Texans players could face devastating effects playing at Azteca Stadium

Azteca Stadium is 7,280 feet above sea level, that’s 2,000 feet higher than the NFL’s most-elevated stadium -- the Broncos’ Sports Authority Field at Mile High, which sits at 5,280 feet.
But it’s not just the altitude that could leave players looking for oxygen masks. Former U.S. national soccer team star Eric Wynalda believes the air quality of Mexico’s capital could also have harmful effects.
“Azteca Stadium is the worst place to ever play a sporting event,” Wynalda told USA Today.
“You can’t breathe. The pollution is so bad that if you don’t have some form of rain that’s brought all that down you are going to be sucking wind.
“They (will) break a record for how many oxygen masks they have on the sidelines. The combination of being that high up with pollution is just devastating to the body.”
If you don’t want to take Wynalda’s word for it, Jorge Avendano Reyes -- a local sports medicine and respiration doctor -- also thinks players might encounter troubling symptoms at Azteca, which is the only stadium that has hosted two soccer World Cup finals.
“There can be headaches, dizziness, sensation of fatigue, accelerated heartbeat, hyperventilation,” Reyes told USA Today. “We can also have respiratory symptoms when we are exposed often to the pollution.

ESPN has been pumping this all morning too. Not even talking about the fact players were told to NOT walk outside the hotel room or bring any jewelry

I assumed it had to do with black dudes having sickle cell. But no....just mexicans living in squalor.

frick that. I'd tell them to keep the paycheck for that game

Remember, Goodell is all about player safety

It's a fricking joke to play this game. The players should sue the league strictly for putting them in such a dangerous city and situation anyway, let alone the possible devastating effects it could have on their bodies and the season.
Goodell should be fired for this alone.. The league really will do anything for couple extra dollars...

I guess they are doing team meals and playing board games. Apparently the "Player Safety" crusade once again falls victim to the abhorrent money grab by Goodell.

What's it going to take to get Goddell out of there? I quasi-understand trying to introduce the NFL to Europe, by why Mexico? The European countries have money to support the NFL. Mexico is just barely above a third-world country. What does the NFL gain by bringing their product to Mexico aside from evidently risking the lives of their players?
Someone else will have to chime in, but is this the NFL's PC response to Trump's campaign beginning in 2015 just like the PGA Tour when they moved tournaments from his courses?

This is why my interest in the league is waning. I can't wait to hear Goodell pretend he cares about player safety. If anyone has to issue any warning about not wearing jewelry, not using an ATM, or eating or drinking outside the hotel, then it's a bad fricking idea.
And why is the pollution so bad? And why can't their government figure out a way to navigate it?

Can't wait for then to boo the National Anthem on national TV

I remember watching their matches with Mexico in the 90's.
That place looked scary as hell.
Like Thunderdome.
With all the fans packed in like sardines screaming behind wire fences and throwing shite on the field.

I don't even care about all that really. The players, more than likely, will be protected
As a very casual Texans fan, I would like to maybe have a Monday night game at home. I am sure Oakland fans would die to have one at home now that they are good.
Instead, they somehow found a more dangerous place for fans to go than the Oakland upper deck

So does the team have security follow around every player that leaves the hotel? The way the league pushes for more fricking games in London, they'll now want more games in Mexico City every year.

I heard that the players can't leave the hotel

I wouldn't worry about it. They will all get robbed at gunpoint when getting off the team busses and won't have gear to play in. Game will be called.

I doubt it.
These NFL players are in great shape. They can handle it.
I was in Mexico City in 2006 and I felt fine.
