Scoby just hit a 59 yarder to win it. It cleared the cross bar by a few yards but, let's say it was only gonna clear it by a foot or so, can the return guy for the kick block team jump and swat it away if he can get to it? Just wondering. I've been watching football for years but this obviously has never come up but, on rare occasions I've see long, game winning field goals barely clear the crossbar

If they can block it at the line of scrimmage, I don't see why they couldn't block it at the cross bar, unless there is some kind of 'goal-tending' rule in the NFL.

This is a really interesting question.

They used to block shite by stacking up in a pyramid.

There can't be a rule against it, it would make no sense.

I don't believe it's ever happened and it would be kind of a risky play.

You gotta think the chances of that happening is insane. That ball is coming in at a decent velocity, and its moderately heavy. I doubt you could keep it from going into the FG.

Get some dude with a 40+ vertical to swat it down

Although, I can see where the situation could backfire, you could actually end up tipping it in for them or hitting you head on the goalpost...

On ESPN last night I was watching something about George Blanda and he was trying to kick a game winning field goal and the other team did this. They had a guy in the endzone who was going to try and block it. So i imagine it would still be legal today.

I think there actually is some kind of obscure rule against doing that.

I saw the same thing on ESPN with Blanda, and I think they said it was still possible to attempt it then, before the goal posts were moved to the back of the end zone. I have no idea on the current rule, but I took it from hearing that that someone trying to block it would have to be on the field (i.e., not in the end zone).

Yea, here's a video of something from the NFL network that shows it at like the 1:50 mark

Apparently the rules were changed after this play to outlaw the practice

OK, I just watched this. That was against the Chiefs. I bet that was Morris Stroud for the Chiefs. I was young when he played but he was a TE and he was around 6'10"

Penalty. The call would be goaltending.

They should send two guys out there and have one sit on the other's shoulders.
