And rank them from most desirable, to least

I've got:

#1 - LSU
#2 - USC
#3 - Tennessee
#4 - Auburn
#5 - Oklahoma - think they win the Herman sweepstakes
#6 - Baylor
#7 - Boston College
#8 - Vanderbilt
#9 - Purdue
#10 - Kansas

I think Les survives as LSU only has another loss or two. Helton survives as USC wants someone to not embarrass the school off the field for another year or two. Butch is going to do well enough. Stoops, I mean that's ridiculous -- he was in the playoffs last year, they can't do any better unless Herman came calling. Don't care about the rest.

You left out Aubie. I also think if things go bad for Strong or Sumlin, those guys are gone.

2-5 won't be fired. Stoops has as much job security as Saban.

I'm an LSU fan.

FYI: Southern Cal is the most desirable. Always has been and always will be. Any other edits would be splitting hairs.

I see 3 very plausible losses on the horizon.

If all of the rumors about the program are true, I think the embarrassment is already happening.

Butch is going to do well enough.

Another loss to Florida, Alabama, possibly Georgia, and probably losing to Texas A&M when they were favored to win the division?

Stoops is my wildcard. I think Herman would strongly consider Oklahoma.

Possibly but I think they both either get to 9 or 10 wins.

I agree but, in light of their schools' recent under-performance, I'm not sure what the W/L total would have to be for either.

In terms of desirability, USC is in a separate tier from the rest of the OP's list.

You can go ahead and take this off the list. His buyout is insane for a program like UK football. He aint getting fired this year.

With their athletic department in shambles, I don't know if a coach would feel fully supported there.

You're right. I didn't know his buyout was $12M.

Barring some really bad collapse from either I think they both stay.

Strong has less of a leash I think, just because A&M hasnt been relevant recently and Sumlin is the only one to do anything halfway decent their recently.

Both will end up keeping their jobs this year.

What does Malzahn do if he gets canned? HC at a smaller school--I think he's still hirable--or back to OC at another big program? Take a year off? NFL OC?

Desirability is relative. Does a coach want to live in a huge city (LA) or a midsize town (BR)? In Baton Rouge and the SEC nothing is bigger than college football. At SC, you're behind the pros (including the NFL now) in terms of popularity. Does a coach like being the center of attention, or does he want to be able to hide a bit? The LSU HC can't go anywhere in LA without being recognized. The SC coach could go many places in L.A. and not be noticed

Historically, SC is a better program. However, recently (since 2000) there's really no difference. Both LSU and SC have played in 3 title games and each has won 2.

Recruiting-wise, California is going to have MANY more good players to choose from than Louisiana. However, LSU is the only show in town in a state which produces an inordinate amount of good football players. UCLA, among others, all pick through California. Plus, BR isn't very far from Houston (a huge recruiting base).

Finally, despite being in small state, LSU will pay for a good coach.

A great coach will get to pick his next destination. It's just a matter of what he wants it to be.
