So many kickers have distance from that far it is incredible

more incredible that bama is 50,000 deep at every position but cannot find a kicker to his a chip shot FG

If I was dedicated (and had no life), I would do the research and find the statistical proof. And I would seriously wager that AJ completes a higher percentage of downfield passes than kickers make 55+ yard field goals.

College OT - Team A gets ball first, Team B pick 6 to win it (this seems plausible enough to have happened already).

NFL OT - More of a rule question.... Team A gets ball first kicks field goal to go up by 3. Next score means game over. Team B receives kickoff, but can't move the ball. Punts back to Team A. What's in the rules that prevents Team A from taking a safety and winning the game by 1?

find the percentage of downfield passes when the entire defense is just guarding the endzone

i say that, and LSU clearly doo doo'd their pants in a similar situation

shite you're right. It's not next score wins, it's just that Team B is guaranteed a possession.

We've seen the fake spike to stop the clock play. Has anyone done a fake out of a kneeling the ball "victory formation"? Say, if Bama had lined up on the last second to just kneel the ball to go into overtime, and instead passed downfield to a receiver going to the endzone.

Surely I'd think it's been done before, but I can't recall ever seeing it.

Ball is dead....

I wasn't necessarily contemplating that the QB would go so far as to fake kneeling it, so much as just setting up in that formation and chunking the ball to a receiver going downfield once he got the snap INSTEAD of kneeling.

Which is why if you score to go up by 1 or 2 with less than 10 seconds left, you should kneel on the extra point.

Nah, run it into the middle of the line. Give yourself a chance to go up three just in case, and if you fumble it in that scenario it's exceedingly unlikely anyone will be able to scoop and score.

Definitely don't go for the XP, I agree, but as a practical matter there's not much difference b/t kneeling and running up the gut

The rest of that story: the officals screwed up and gave them a 5th down, they scored and won, and won a national championship.

I think the QB was Darian Hagan. Was not Kordell Stewart.

Y'all can make fun of the officials all you want for the 5th down, but the Colorado qb would not have spiked the ball if the down marker was correct.

I have seen teams cover a double digit spread in overtime.

Team A gets the ball first and scores a TD. Now on defense, Team A gets a pick 6 (or a scoop and score). It's happened before.

I've never seen this happen in college or NFL. But this is by far the craziest ending I have witnessed was at a high school game.

The situation was similar to the iron bowl. Tied up, headed to OT. Except there was 5 seconds left on the clock, ball on the opponents 40, and coach wanted one last shot to score. So qb tgrows it in the air, defender picks it off in the endzobe. He returns it to probably the other teams 30, before he tackles and fumbles. The other team picks it up and starts running the other way. It looks like hes going to get tackled, until he pitches it to someone else who then runs it in.

This was by far the craziest play i have ever witnessed in sports. Looked like something straight out of a video game

2. Team A fumbles ball in victory formation with 10 seconds left and team B returns for a TD. (I think this sort of happened in 1998; Arky vs. Tenn and Tenn won the NC later. But there was over a minute left and Tenn still had to drive down the field)

This basically happened in the "Miracle at the Meadowlands" game in 1978 between the Eagles and Giants. Last play of the game the Giants ran the ball instead of kneeling it, ball carrier fumbles and is returned for a TD to win the game. The game actually had 10 seconds left just like in your scenario.

And Herm Edwards was the player that picked up the fumble.

I always wondered if a team were on its own 1 yard line with 1 minute left and down by 1 point (or 4 points) if the smart move would be to take the safety and hope to get the onside kick.
