The US didn't qualify for the World Cup. MSB rejoice.

It's the only time the average person cares about soccer. The people who need to become fans to grow the sport. 8 years between world cups? Ouch...

That's a long time between people acting like they care, like you said. No one will remember what US soccer is by the time 2024 rolls around.

People have been saying this for the last 20+ years. When the women won the World Cup, people still didn't care.

Soccer will just never be popular here.

Same guys who act like they stand with their hand over their heart while they watch a noon NFL game on Fox.

I'm sitting in Oggi's in Fullerton and that game (match?) was on every screen except two. The others were on the Yankees/Indians game and the Tejas/K-State game. Every now and then a big cheer or groan would go up and I looked up to see what had happened in one of those two games. Nothing as far as I could tell. Then I realized it was the soccer that was causing the reaction. WTF?

People pretend to like soccer because they think it makes them seem worldly and cultured compared to those around them. It’s the same kind of snobbish hipster behavior as someone who says they only listen to “underground bands” like their musical taste is too sophisticated for music that isn’t totally obscure.

The World Cup was a nice excuse to go to an Irish bar at 9 in the morning on a Wednesday and drink beer, but I certainly won't be shattered by this result. I think a lot of diehard US soccer fans might need to tamper their expectations for what US soccer is.
