These are some damn harsh penalties.
They didn't get the DP, but it must seem to PSU they got life in prison.

Wtf? NCAA gets hammered for going soft handed on infractors, and also for wielding "limitless power?"
Yeah, going soft against schools that are deemed to have violated known rules is as bad as wielding limitless power.

PSU can leave the NCAA any time it wants.
Sure. I don't give a shite about PSU. I just don't trust the NCAA and think it is a dangerous precedent to set.

Not in my mind.

I'll always call them cheaters...not that the crimes had anything to do with the game.

You think these guys will get a gig in college football soon. Pete has a nice job in the NFL but there's no way he gets hired at a big time program again. Same with Tressell.

Maybe, maybe not. Certainly not Tressell but Carroll maybe, especially if he leaves the Seahawks in good order. Calipari was still employable after cheating issues.

An besides, if you're Carroll, it's still worth it to cheat and jump ship as long as your timing is right. USC's sanctions were of no consequence to him and won't serve as a deterrent to the next coach who thinks he can boost his career by cheating.

Not directly indicating where money comes from is stupid.

Good analogy.

It'll be at least a decade before they are relevant after this.

the precedent means nothing, much like Goodall wielding limitless power against the Saints. The NCAA, like Goodall, has always had this power. It has been given to them by each individual conference in the NCAA, and therefore each school.

You act like the NCAA created it's own power. No, it has no power that hasn't been granted to it by the member institutions. You should go complain to your University's President and AD if you think the NCAA has too much power.

Taking the wins away means that Paterno is FAR from being the winningest coach ever. That distinction now belongs to Bobby Bowden.

In overall career wins, the all-time leader is John Gagliardi with 484 wins, mostly at the Division III level.[3] Gagliardi began his head coaching career at Carroll College in Helena, Montana in 1949, and in 1953 took his current job at Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. Joe Paterno, head coach at Penn State from 1966 to 2011, is second with 409 career wins, and Eddie Robinson, head coach at Grambling State University from 1941 to 1997 with a two-season hiatus during World War II, is third with 408.[2][3]Bobby Bowden is in fourth place and Bear Bryant in fifth place.[3]

Among NCAA Division I coaches, the all-time win leader Eddie Robinson (408), Bobby Bowden (377), Bear Bryant (323), Tubby Raymond (300), Joe Paterno (298), and LaVell Edwards (257). However, due to a sex scandal, Grambling State is pushing to have Paterno's wins removed so that Robinson will again take his place at winningest Division I coaches.

Joe Pa is getting the "DP" of another sort right now. Same for Sandusky.

The $60m fine is nothing. Boosters will have that paid off by the end of the day.

I'm not a student or a booster. I think I'll just share my opinion here if that is ok.

No I don't. I act as if I think it is a dangerous precedent for the NCAA to start wielding this type of power.

the danger then is not in the wielding of the power, but that they have the ability to wield power that you don't agree they should have.

what's the point in them having the power if they don't use it?

Your issue should be with the NCAA, it should be with the institutions giving them this much power.

I don't really like Penn State covering up years of child molestation. This "exercise of authority" is completely warranted.

I think that's kind of the idea, eh? Don't cover up for child rapists, and your school won't have to worry about it.

Amiright?

Absolutely. The damage is that Joe Pa will never be recognized as the all-time winningest coach. His statue is gone and the squeaky clean rep of the school is dead. And they'll suck at football for a long time!

I'm not saying they can't pay it, but I think you're underestimating what a huge amount of money that is. It's not always easy for schools to pull together even 6-8 million for a coach's buyout. I seriously doubt Penn State can find 6 people willing to just write a check for ten million dollars to pay a fine.

Did they state which specific bylaws they are basing it on? I caught the penalties on my drive to work but didn't hear the rest of the PC.
