No helmet is going to save football. Only way to prevent this head trauma stuff is to play flag football

Need to get rid of the face mask. Will necessitate more rugby style tackling.

One of my boys wore one during spring practice. Coach had anyone that had ever had a concussion wear them for added protection

Face mask has been the single problem.

No one is going to want a knee to the nose by diving in head first.

Paterno and Ditka argued for years that football needs to get rid of the facemask.

"I've been saying for 15 years we ought to get rid of the facemask," Paterno said on his weekly conference call. "Then you go back to shoulder blocking, shoulder tackling, and you wouldn't have all those heroes out there."
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review quotes Paterno as adding, "We used to have one single bar; now we have a weapon…"

"I don't think people would strike with the head as much," Ditka said. "You would learn to strike with the shoulder pads if you didn't have a helmet on your head."

Heaven forbid they wear thigh and knee pads. I see more NBA players wearing leggings with knee cushions in them more then NFL skill position players wearing leg and knee padding.

Maybe he should have been saying there's a dude molesting kids. Somehow I don't think it would have taken 15 years for traction on that issue.

Most of the hard hitting people in the NFL grew up with rough backgrounds. Sacrificing your health for the money comes with the job description. Someone will always be willing to take/receive those hits for the money.

Even without face masks, someone out there will sacrifice their cheek bone

I just think adding to the helmet compounds the problem.

Lowering your head - to get lower then the next guy - in a battering ram stance...doesn't solve anything. Extra protection will likely equate to extra risk.

The helmet or head protection in whatever form can't be a weapon. That's the only solution. Because humans have a self-preservation instinct that trumps everything else.

You can't make people feel they are invincible. Because as we've learned, they are far from that with the best helmets. But the facemask is the key; facemask makes the helmet a weapon...helmet by itself isn't that bad...and would become mostly just protective. Facemask makes the helmet a weapon. It makes everyone fearless.

Sure, as the previous poster mentioned there will still be heroes out there to make a name for themselves.

But the majority isn't going to slam their nose and face into a running back busting through the line.

truff.

I can't imagine how fricked up the fingers/hands/forearms are of NFLers mid season. and like you said, no one seems to have pads in their pants...

Marcus Allen used to get fined by the NFL because he always played without knee pads. He said they were worthless as protection and hindered his running.

Tailbone pad is probably the most useful pad in football regarding the lower body...Getting knocked on your arse can't be protected by going low.

Allen also wore small and light thigh pads...thinking them just heavy wastes of time. For a great running back, shoulder pad were everything and leg pads meant nothing.
