started thinking today about how OU seems to be at the top or near the top in many different sports.

final 4 in basketball and football, about to win the NC in softball. Golf almost won the national title last week.

got me thinking that you dont see many schools like that in a non talent rich state that also shares the state with another conference school dominate like that.

what do you attribute this to? ive been to Norman many of times and its nowhere near the atmosphere or look of most SEC towns and other rivals like Austin, so i just wonder how they get all these top notch athletes to go there? i mean, it is Oklahoma.

They have to win another game. It wasn't like last night was a clobbering, they had one 3 run homer and very nearly blew it at the end

Totally subjective and been blown out of proportion by "star rankings".

They're having a great year but this isn't the norm. They're very solid historically in basketball and baseball though (and a top program in football). They recruit Texas well in every sport and get the very best in Oklahoma (which is far from barren like Kansas or Nebraska). They put a lot of resources into every sport

frick Oklahoma. that is all.

eta: they recruit well in non-revenue sports because they offer a lot more scholarship $ than most schools can or do.

Texas stinking in most sports these days also helps OU, i would imagine.

the fact that the only P5 school in DFW is a small private in TCU is the biggest thing going for them.

over time TCU is going to hurt them though.

also, if the SEC were to add Ole Texas... I mean SMU, that would really kick them in the balls.

OU has recruited the DFW area well in football, Bob Stoops is a great coach, and the basketball team had a player who could put them on his back and win games by himself along with a good supporting cast.

Its not that far off from a LSU standpoint when you think about it.

LSUs golf team won a National Title last year and damn near won again this year. LSUs softball team was in the Final 4 this year and CWS last year. LSU baseball made the CWS last year and is in a good position to go again this year. LSUs football team, at one point, was ranked #2 last year before faltering and many have them in the College Football Playoff this year. LSUs Track and Fields teams are always in the hunt for National Titles. LSUs Gymnastics team finished runner to the National Championship this year.

it's been a fantastic year for OU sports, no doubt (even some one the ones you left out).

what do you mean by this? norman is a very nice town, and while the game day atmosphere may not be as intense as some SEC towns, it's certainly not lacking for anything.

any lack of talent within oklahoma is made up for by its proximity to texas.

Some people truly don't understand that pretty much all big colleges provide a fun atmosphere, they think slight statistical attributes of a surrounding state actually matter in this insular environment, and that the internet reputation of "shithole" (which is applied to 99% of all places in America) is a valid concern in the real world

Good point. OU is out there in the middle of nowhere with little talent.

But the Midwest seems to hold it's own against the Pac-12, while the South can't for whatever reason. (put all eggs in one basket, I suppose and no money for anything else to provide students with athletic opportunities.)

While Stanford dominates the Directors Cup along with UCLA and USC, the Midwest is up there right now.

Stanford, Michigan and Ohio State are top 3.

USC is #6.

Oklahoma is #12.

It's dominated by the midwest and west coast...which rewards overall athletic excellence in all sports.
