NY Post Columnist: Might as well call them the New Jersey N____as

He says this about the Nets new brand/image:
then
The strange part is, he makes some decent points.... but in a terrible way IMHO
quote:
As long as the Nets are allowing Jay-Z to call their marketing shots — what a shock that he chose black and white as the new team colors to stress, as the Nets explained, their new “urban” home — why not have him apply the full Jay-Z treatment?
Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N------s? The cheerleaders could be the Brooklyn B----hes or Hoes. Team logo? A 9 mm with hollow-tip shell casings strewn beneath. Wanna be Jay-Z hip? Then go all the way!
then
quote:
Such obvious, wishful and ignorant mischaracterizations of what I write are common. I don't call black men the N-word; I don't regard young women as bitches and whores; I don't glorify the use of assault weapons and drugs. Jay-Z, on the other hand.....Is he the only NBA owner allowed to call black men N---ers?
Jay-Z profits from the worst and most sustaining self-enslaving stereotypes of black-American culture and I'M the racist? Some truths, I guess, are just hard to read, let alone think about.

I hope the columnist is black, or his career is over.
And country stars don't profit by making country people sound like morons?

Not really, what are you talking about?
In any event, there's a tab bit of difference between looking like a moron and glorifying gang violence which causes actual harm. Maybe you missed the part where the Wqshing Bullets changed their name to the Wizards because people were upset over urban violence.

he does and its a terrible way because people are programed to be offended.
ETA: His 2nd points about JayZ and rappers in general re inforcing negative stereotypes is correct, his first point about changing the name and logo is not since he is making that stuff up.

I will be in the minority and say he has a point, however can the same thing be said about actors in hollywood, who play controvesial roles in movies?
Jay-Z only owns a small percentage of the New Jeresy Nets, and contrary to info that's being put out there he makes very few important decisions on the day to day running of the franchise. He's a figure head, I respect Jay-Z, but it's pretty obvious what his role with the team is.

He does have a point, but I doubt he has a job in the next week or so.

Good lord, you could fill up an entire lifetime talking about country singers who basically endorse drinking.

Here's the original column, after reading this, I really don't get why he's saying what he did. They changed the colors to black and white to fit an "urban" image. so what? Nothing glamorizing gang life necessrily about that. Really his points are a basically a strawman.

Aren't the Obama's really good friends with Jay Z and Beyonce? If memory serves, they had special, invitation only, seating at the inaguration and have been frequent visitors to the WH.
As an aside, the NBA is what it is and is not what it is not. A large majority of NBA players (probably greater than 80%) reflect exactly the same image and lifestyle as Jay Z. Let them be who they are going to be and quit worrying about it.
Is this a sustainable business model in modern America. Probably so, as suprising as that might be to some.

One thing that's ironic is that this guy lambastes the Nets and Jay-Z for helping enforce negative stereotypes, but the color scheme and logo set could not be more plain; I'll be careful saying this, but I'd expect that since Jay-Z designed it, it would be really really tacky to the Caucasian eye. That's one big element to this that goes directly against a stereotype.
And I love the Nets new logos, brother.
