North Dakota cutting baseball and men's golf programs

Amid 12.6 million budget shortfall from state revenue.

Baseball has been played continuously since 1956 and the sport has roots at the school dating back to 1889. Men’s golf has been played every year at UND since 2008.
The cuts will affect seven student-athletes and one coach in golf and 29 student-athletes and five coaches in baseball, according to the school’s website.

I'm sure the change has impacted the university some....but I'm not sure how much money they were making on merchandising prior to the change. I'm just glad that I got my cap with that gorgeous logo before they made them phase it out.

That thing was iconic in jerseys...maybe in a bad way...and that's why it sold, and maybe in a good way in defense...that's why it sold.
But no doubt, taking something controversial off the market...is a big hit in popularity...because controversy and cool names sell.

But I'd agree...
College Baseball in the North is like Tennis, Golf, Swimming, water-polo, Volleyball, often Track and Field (1930-1980) and gymnastics, women's softball. Basically, any sport that isn't football and sometimes baseball.
They suck at that stuff and the North by and large sucks at baseball.

The North has hockey the South has baseball.
College hockey is just a tad bit bigger for the 3rd largest NCAA sport, attendance wise.

hockey is very regional. it's big in michigan, illinois, PA, NY, and minny. almost non-existent in Ohio, indiana, and the NE excluding NE
the south has baseball? ahh, not quite. baseball is king in the NE as a whole, IMO. yankees, mets, phillies, red sox have large followings and draw huge interest

The NCAA should allow two seasons of baseball. Northern Schools should start the season in April and go until June and have a College World Series for Northern Schools in early July.
Schools in the South and West Coast can keep the traditional start in February and have the Omaha World Series in early June.
Problem solved. There's no reason why you can't have two regional champs since you different champs based on divisions.
