The last was Lennie Merullo who passed away on Saturday at age 98.

quote:

Merullo, who died on Saturday at 98 in Reading, Mass., played shortstop for the 1945 Cubs, the franchise’s last pennant winner, and was the last surviving ballplayer to have worn a Cubs uniform in a World Series.

quote:

Leonard Richard Merullo was born on May 5, 1917, one of 12 children of Italian immigrants, and played baseball at Villanova before signing with the Cubs’ organization. He appeared in 639 major league games with a career batting average of .240.

Why is it there is such an obsession that the Cubs haven't been involved in the World Series in a long time? It isn't like there are only three teams.

I have never understood it. There are teams in all the leagues that haven't won titles.

With the way Lester Earl shite talks other teams, you would think they have won the past three.

This guy is a fricking idiot though.

Teams from a top-3 biggest city in the US and that have been around for over 100 years?

It is bad for sports if the city matters at all and in regards to success.

I think it's just the Mariners and the Nats, and they haven't been around for 70 years.
Pirates may be next longest; then Orioles and Brewers

Brewers were in the Series in '82.. It'll be a while until it happens to them.

The Chicago Cubs are a complete disgrace of a franchise. I laugh more and more at their mediocrity.

How many people alive have played in a World Series game against the Cubs? It was never a large group to begin with, and I'm sure it is miniscule by now.

I wonder if their fans blame Bartman for 08 as well.

My favorite Cubs World Series fact is the Ottoman Empire was still in existence the last time they won one.

It's a 35 season drought for the Pirates, winning in their last appearance in 1979.

The Pirates have won all 5 of their World Series since the Cubs last won (09, 25, 60, 71, 79).
