Agree on both counts.

Probably would add that we have probably reached the tipping point of fans' insatiable appetite or NFL happenings. There's no "season" anymore--pro football gets year-round coverage (especially the past few years with deflategate). Just think folks are a little fatigued.

Personally, my habits haven't changed much. Pretty much stick to watching my Cowboys and Texans and that's it.

I don't watch Thursday, Sunday or Monday night, and I just put the Redzone channel on if I'm home on Sunday.

It's pretty simple. It's a boring, stale product.

LOW energy broadcasts. NCAAF is high energy.

Tonight's Jags-Titans showdown will restore order.

Dude, you are always in these threads. You absolutely HATE the NFL. We get it, man.

1, I don't hate it. Just wish it wasn't so boring nowadays. 2, only made the post to mess with SBWM.

There's just no excitement in the games, college football is so much better with incredible game atmospheres every week

yeah i think there are a ton of issues and most have been pointed out in this thread

1. the quality of the product is down. too many flags (esp against defenses) hurt a great deal. we are really seeing sloppy play which is likely linked to the new CBA limiting practice time. it's just not that great to watch and the really great games are rare

2. the NFL is facing demographic problems. the protesting stuff did piss off a lot of wal mart shoppers, who are the biggest and most loyal fanbase of the NFL. add this to the NFL trying very very hard te past few years to market to new demos and it's just turning off the backbone of their fanbase i'd imagine

3. growth isn't always going to be there and the NFL may have just hit its peak and only has one direction to go now

And the sloppy play, especially early on, can also be attributed to the last CBA with the condensation of the offseason workouts/practices

This as well. Defenses are neutered. Penalties are at absurd rates. Commercials occur every 5 mins. Games take upwards of 4 hours.

Boring product.

That is TV in general.
Commercials will drive the most dedicated fan out of the room.
Then the shitty play starts.

Garbage officiating and too many fricking commercial breaks

Then why are college football ratings up? NFL has far less commercials, shorter halftime (12 minutes to nearly 25 minutes) and shorter game times. A&M/Tennessee lasted 5 hours a few weeks ago.

It is. For some reason, it just doesn't have the same luster it used to.

I know it is beaten to death, but part is the political stories they added to it. It is just getting annoying. Sports is supposed to be an escape from real life.

Another aspect is just the overall saturation of the market.

The presidential election counts for some, but not a majority of its issues.

It really is hard to get at the reasons for the change when very few of us probably understand why it appeals less to us than it once did.

As I'm getting older I watch sports more selectively, instead of consuming everything in sight. I think that's probably just normal television demographic type change. So what else could it be?

Perhaps the political schism between the general sports watching audience and the athletes is an issue? People of all walks of life and political bents do watch football, but perhaps the BLM or other political messaging has disenchanted people who are centrist or right of center? But the problem with that seems to be the ratings seem to be down across the board, rather than just in parts of the country or in particular types of households. So politics alone seems like an unlikely explanation.

What about the CTE/concussions issue? That could be a lot of it but it would be interesting because the tipping point of that seems hard to identify. Perhaps it is a more indirect effect. We were sort of used to people just being walked or lifted off the field when they were plastered. Now, there are a lot fewer of those big hits, and the ones that happen result in significant game delays, penalties, reviews for additional consideration RE: targeting etc. That is a lot less entertaining than the worldstar style review that big football hits used to get.

Do we now get less enjoyment out of the game because we don't like the big hits or consequences of the hits on the players? Or do we like the game less because there are fewer of those and that was a lot of what made the game specifically entertaining (compared to say baseball or soccer)?

To me, there's just a lot of parity, mediocre players, and a watered down boring product. It doesn't have the national appeal it once did.

There are several QB's in the league that are just atrocious and have no business in the NFL.

Throw in all the BLM bullshite and the election and you have what you see now.

I remember years ago the Saints played a Halloween night regular season game and the ratings for that game blew the world series out of the water.

Too many commercials, too many flags, anytime an offense gets clicking someone gets hurt and that's ANOTHER commercial break. And too many crappy teams with players no one wants to watch.
