I personally think that the physical portion of the combine as to predicting the success of a player is way overrated. I know that different teams probably use the information that they gather at the combine differently, but the media has really hyped this event recently. So, who are some who fit the thread title?

Vernon Gholston

quote:

One of the main reasons teams remain skeptical of off-the-charts Combine stats, Gholston was the classic “look like Tarzan, play like Jane.” In shorts and a muscle shirt, Gholston ran a 4.67 in the 40, had 37 reps on the bench and lifted off for a 35.5” vertical and 10’5” broad jump.

That link doesn't only have busts but also great players

Mike Mamula is the reason the term "workout warrior" entered the lexicon so he belongs in the thread.

I don't think that's how NFL teams see it. Success in the NFL is largely governed by what's between the player's ears. And that's a hard thing to forecast. So teams take a statistical shotgun approach. They know some players are going to translate to the NFL and some aren't, so of the ones that do, they'd rather have a guy that runs a 4.4.

Mamula was not a bust though, he played for 6 or 7 years? Mamula also had decent Sr year and would have been a low first high 2nd round pick most likely.

Akili Smith is a bust.

Trent Richardson is one of the overall strongest people to ever play in the NFL

I don't know how he did in the Combine but physically speaking, Taylor Mays was a freak.

I think that's true for SOME, as I mentioned in the OP. However, I don't believe you would say that an organization like NE uses this approach.

The combine only gauges an individuals athletic ability, NOT their FOOTBALL ability.

The first thing any coach, scout or draft analyst looks at is size and speed. Those are 2 things that cannot be coached up. What they cannot measure is heart, desire or instinct.

Bruce Campbell

6'6" 314 lb OT from Maryland

Ran a 4.85 and did 34 bench reps. Raiders drafted him in the top 10 and he plays for the Saskatchewan Rough Riders now.

Derrius Heyward-Bey probably falls into this category but at least he's still in the league, same with Barkevious Mingo

My boy Broderick Bunkely was a huge bust. Aaron Curry. Who else?....Tim Tebow. I can't think of anymore off the top of my head.

Mandarich also. He ended up as an OL and had a successful career.

Mario Fannin ran a 4.38 at 231 pounds and had a 37.5" vertical and still went undrafted. Combine freak nonetheless
