FWIW, we fired our coach during the season when things looked bleak. Nebraska is far, far, worse off. They beat Arkansas State by a TD and lost to Oregon and Northern Illinois. They are a power who is now truly mediocre.

Nebraska took this action because they allowed it get that far.

Maybe they'll hire Alleva from us. We can only hope we'd be so lucky

Give them credit for trying, but much like Notre Dame, Nebraska may be a relic of a past era. The state and surrounding area is not a recruiting hotbed. The SEC isn't racist anymore and black players in the south are willing to go to SEC/Big 12 schools moreso than they were in the 70's/80's. Every school is on TV now. Nebraska use to dominate TV when they were at their height.

Nebraska should take a page out of the Bill Synder playbook and try to bring in some JUCO guys to supplement the loss of talent they used to get. It's possible for Nebraska to become somewhat relevant again, just not with their former model.

Alleva probably already sent his resume
Miles ought to apply for the Nebraska AD job with the way he cheered them on in the booth

Nebraska should have never left the Big 12. It has killed their recruiting.

AD's are rich and lazy. He hired Mike Riley, who thought that was a good idea.

Kudos to Nebraska for getting rid of failure as their AD

Like Alabama, they have a rabid fan base who want to get back to where they were twenty years ago. Florida State and Nebraska were the two most dominant teams of the 1990s. And Nebraska was a Top 5 caliber program throughout the 70s and 80s. That 30-year run is unparalleled in the history of college football.

Since their losses to Colorado and Miami at the end of the 2001 season, they have been a mere shadow of their former selves. After the loss to Northern Illinois last weekend, they have all but slipped into the realm of irrelevance. Their fans are desperate to get back to where they were at the end of the 90s. In short, they're a lot like Alabama fans were at the end of the '06 season.

The state of Alabama, although not as fertile a recruiting ground as Georgia, Florida, or Louisiana, borders all three of those states, and produces fairly elite in-state talent itself. Nebraska produces hardly any elite in-state talent and doesn't really border any states that do. So it's much more difficult to recruit to Nebraska than it is to Alabama. And the loopholes that were in place twenty years ago that helped Nebraska overcome that disadvantage are no longer in existence.

So will they ever get back to where they were under Tom Osborne? I don't know. It's going to be a very long and tough road.

It's hard to see a light in the tunnel for Nebraska.

Should've stayed in the Big 12 with the exposure to Texas recruits (a la OU and OSU), and kept their rivalries with OU and the rest of the big 12.

While I agree about Texas recruiting, Nebraska has gotten a pretty impressive foot into California. Having Keith Williams on staff helps. Recruits love him.

Also, let's not forget that Nebraska is now a fully-vested member of the B1G. Nebraska received $9M from the Big 12 in 2010. When it joined the B1G in 2011, it received $14M. From there, the value increased to $15.4M -> $16.9M -> $18.7M -> $22M (2016). Nebraska estimates, as a full-fledged member, they could be receiving $47M from the B1G this year.

They're fine in the B1G and Nebraska fans think so, too. An Oklahoma State fan went over to Huskerboard a couple days ago and everyone said 'No' about returning to the Big XII.

Isn't there some landmass that separates Louisiana and Alabama?

It was and still is the right move. It's all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, and they're making boatloads more in the B1G. Not to mention I like the rivalry we've developed with them.

I was just thinking after watching Nebraska getting beat by NIU.."man I'm glad we aren't them, what a fall from grace!" And then we lost by 30 to Mississippi State.

I used to get frustrated at Lloyd Carr 9-3 Michigan seasons. Now, I'm cool with 9-3 football.

That's what happens when you have all those wins but only two national titles in the Poll Era.
