Anyone know why he left Iowa and went to the University of New Mexico? Seems like a lateral move in terms of jobs, or even a step down. With UNM's current standing, it seems like a major steal that such a small program could bring in such a good coach.

No clue, but he has that team absolutely rolling. The duel between BYU and New Mexico in the Mountain West should be very entertaining this year, although both are most certainly going to be dancing when it's all said and done.

Because Iowa did not give him things they promised him when he left SMS. He was guaranteed new facilities, never happened. He was promised more support staff, never happened. He and his family became targets for some people at Iowa. He took more money and more focus on basketball to leave.

The worst thing that happend to coach was when Sam left, as he was the X and O guy.

Some of the shots taken by the Iowa people involved family also, so why stay where he isnt wanted.

Thanks for the info, wanted to make sure it wasn't scandalous. Hopefully the lobos get a good run out of him this year, they aren't likely to pony up a 7 figure salary to keep him long term. I hear he is getting his facilities though. Its much easier to be a basketball school than a football school

Coach isnt about the money. He wants to be the big fish in small pond. That is what drove him usually while at SMS. He would make comments, especially about Self, when we played there.

The whiffle ball practice, before we got hammered by Duke, was just for show. He has an Ego, always will. But I will guarantee he is still the best pure shooter on New Mexico's Campus. I have never seen someone light up 3's like him during our Mgr/Coaches games after px.

Seems like this would be such an uneven match-up

I have only played with one person who is in the same league as Alford. To make the games even the least bit competitive, he wouldn't shoot in the games and would never dribble beyond the free throw line

Well Sam was old and Coach never usually shot unless we started making lucky shots.

We had a freshman mgr who started talking trash to him and he went 10 for 10 and we had to get a ladder to unwinde the net on his last shot since he ripped it so perfect. That was probably the most memorable game we had.

Nice info. My uncle is a team doc at NM, says he's a character guy for sure, but has the ego you would expect for any D1 coach, in any sport. I'm hoping being able to dominate the MWC will keep him there for a few years.
