The funny thing is that if Hansen and Ballmer pulled a Bennett and lied saying that they would keep the team in Sacramento, then Seattle would have a basketball team again soon.

Sacramento found a group that could pay $550 million to keep their team from going to Seattle. Seattle isn't going to give up, I think the Bucks and Wolves are on notice now.

The owner of the thunder who pushed to move the sonics is part of the committee. That should not have happened.

Do you really think that Seattle wants to go through all of this again only two get screwed over for a 3rd time? I'm thinking this might be the end, although with all of the land owned and everything, they are pretty far into this.

I don't think they got screwed today. It was going to be difficult to get the Kings to Seattle if there were buyers willing to keep them in Sac. I'm sure it feels like getting screwed though because the process is different from when the Sonics were stolen.
And yes I think they continue to go for a team. Hansen group is legit and I'm sure they realized this was always a possibility.

wow didn't see this coming but it was the right thing to do a local ownership wanted to keep the team in sacramento and had the finances to do it

Yeah, but Ballmer was willing to buy the team to keep them in Seattle when they were threatening to move them to OKC and got denied. It just reeks of Stern.

Good point. Hansen and Ballmer are too smart to put all of their eggs in one basket. They're about $100 million into this already.

IIRC, Ballmer didn't step up to the plate until about 2-3 years after Bennett had bought the team from Starbucks magnate Howard Schultz and Schultz had been trying to sell to an owner in Seattle for some time before that as well as failing to get public support for a new arena.
If Ballmer wanted to keep the Sonics in Seattle, he should have bought them before Bennett did.

Yes, that's true. Although if Bennett took the approach that Hansen/Ballmer did and was honest about his intentions to move, I have no doubts someone would have stepped up. When he promised to keep the team here, there wasn't the same local uproar as there was in Sacramento.
There's twitter rumors (who knows how reliable) that the NBA is going to discuss over the next couple of weeks how to satisfy the Seattle ownership group and expansion is getting thrown around. We'll see....

Also need to think about what this does for franchise values around the league. The Sixers went for 280 just two years ago, the Hornets 340 last year. Seattle sets their sights on the Kings and all of a sudden they are worth 550? That's great for the rest of the owners, it will be even better when they go down the line and do the same to Milwaukee, Minnesota, and Charlotte.

My point was that, by that time, Bennett et all had put a lot into the team, gotten Durant, and were poised for success.
The NBA forcing a sale to a new buyer who didn't bother expressing interest in the team 2-3 years prior was not going to happen.

the amount of people playing basketball has increased exponentially since the 70s and 80s.
The talent drain isn't b/c there are too many NBA teams, its b/c there are now legitimate options overseas that can pay more for guys who would be strong bench players here.
Dump the cap and institute full revenue sharing across the board and that can be mitigated.
