Why not give them the cash equivalent of a full ride college tuition? And then have them be required to pay their way.

1) For players with no non athletic scholarships, the results are the same. They are credited, say...100K and are given a fee bill of 100K. No personal profit.
2) High school players with college aspirations might attempt to do better in school, in order to earn more scholarships, so as to retain the most of their "athletic scholarship" for personal use.
3) Under todays system a player who is a great athlete AND student is told that they get a free ride for playing football. This isnt true. They would have already gotten that scholarship.

The only caveat i see under this is that scholarships can be given by private citizens. This could be given to players as basically a way to win recruits. You come here and you get to keep all your money cause we will pay your tuition bill. But is that really such a bad thing? The maximum a player could earn would still be the equivalent of a tuition.

Harvard would definitely win a National Championship though .

Boosters would give private scholarships to all recruits. Athletes would have no desire to go to a cheaper school or somewhere with in state tuition

I brought these up in my OP. There would have to be tweeks obviously. The whole plan wouldnt just be copy/paste of a post on a forum haha.

My uncle teaches sports law so I will ask him.
Should they get a stipend or let them work with a strict pay

Ivy League athletes only get need based aid anyway. And how would this help them? The super smart kids could get academic scholarships elsewhere and pocket the money rather than paying tuition.

I could see it now.
"Well Johnny your 2.1 high school GPA barely qualifies you for our private scholarship fund owned by (insert major booster here). So now that your tuition is covered by that, here's your $100,000 for football, don't spend it all in one place!"

Great feedback. Because you didnt state why you didnt like ill assume you enjoy free labor. and since a lot of college athletes are black, ill further assume you like free black labor. And ill even further assume that makes you pro slavery. See what your laziness got you. You are a slave loving bigot now. Think about that.

Would just making it to where like up to 20K of a scholarship was treated this way? Tuition is 36k a year=16k in tuition covered+20K in cash credit+a fee bill of 20K.
or
Tuition is 100k a year=80k in tuition covered+20K in cash credit+a fee bill of 20K.

And that it was based on out of state tuition?

Also it would be amazing the private scholarships the REC would suddenly fund.

This is the worst consequence? Someone getting paid the amount the market dictates their service is worth? OH MY GOD WHAT WILL WE DO?!

Well then you are fricking over the students who actually earn those other scholarships

Or we can continue to pay them $100,000 + in a college education. If they choose to be dumbasses and blow it, then so be it. Those who get their degrees and actually learn something will benefit 10 fold later when they actually know how to manage their millions that they make professionally. Those that don't go pro...they got an experience of a lifetime playing collegiate sports that 99% of people don't get. And got a free education with which to start the rest of their life.

That's not payment. They are going into their pockets and spending money on their behalf

Imagine if at your job they said "We are going to keep paying you 70K a year but 40 of that is in training courses and the other 30 is in work experience that we've valued at 30K a year. That will prove invaluable as you continue your career."

Its insane the thought process some of you have. None of you are titans of industry. None of you are CEOs. Yet you all bend over backwards to defend these guys at the expense of the guy.

I assume most of you are college football fans. Youre basically walking up to the ticket gates, handing them $85 bucks to see a good football team and then pointing at the guys youre there to see and saying "make sure those frickers dont get a dime of this"

Hester.

Obviously you are not paying for someone's education.

I could agree with you if we can just admit that they aren't really students in the first place. Pay them the tuition room and board cost or give them a scholarship. Their choice. If they choose the money let them play without pretending to go to school.
