Peyton has another game, btw. What if he ends up with 55 or 56 touchdowns against only 10 interceptions and over 5,500 yards versus Marino's 48 touchdowns, 17 interceptions, and 5,084 yards? Does that change your opinion?

Marino was 16 touchdowns better than the #2 QB that year. Manning is 16 touchdowns better than the #2 QB this year.

For the record, I think Marino is probably the best pure passer in NFL history and what he did in 1984 is remarkable. That being said, Manning is the best football mind at the QB position in NFL hiatory and what he is doing in 2013 is remarkable as well.

I think Peyton manning would agree with that statement, Marino was his idol, and even said he doesn't think he should be mentioned in the same breath. And I know thats just Manning being the humble guy he his is but sure does say a lot.

Great post btw

Thanks.

Manning definitely has been very humble throughout all of this, in stark contrast to most NFL players. He even said he thought the record would be temporary and said he considered it a team accomplishment.

Marino's age is not and argument in favor of manning IMO.

Marino did all that shite in his second professional season! That is more impressive. Damn near fresh out of college and lit it up like no one had in nfl history

Manning never did what Marino did to the 85 Bears defense

And Mark Brunell shredded the 2000 Ravens defense. Your point?

People shouldn't disregard such accomplishments so quick. Both are impressive in their own right. Both are historic achievements. Marino's was damn impressive considering the way the game was played then, and that he was a second year QB. Peyton's is equally impressive considering he can SHRED the record if he wants to (ala Tom Brady throwing till the last minutes of game 16). He is also 37 and coming off the most serious type of injury a QB can suffer.

So, congrats to Manning, and I will enjoy watching him play while he still can. Just like people missed Marino when he retired, it will be a sad day for the NfL when Manning stops playing.

Marino by far. Now if someone gets 60. Then we can talk. The rules were so different back then.

What did Marino do in 1985 against the bears that was so special?

He barely completed 50% of his passes, (14 of 27), for 270 yards, 3 TDs, and 1 INT.

If performance against the 85 Bears is the gold standard of QB play, then Marino wasn't shite.

That year. Steve DeBerg threw for 346 yards, (on 23 of 43 passes), and 2 TDs. Tommy Kramer threw for 436 yards and 3 TDs

The 85 Bears gave up an average of 258 yards and 12.4 points a game.

Here is what Manning did against defenses that put up similar numbers to that 85 Bears defense:

quote:

2009 New York Jets defense: 252 yards and 14.8 points a game

In the AFC Championship game: 26 of 37, 377 yards, 3 TDs & 0 INTs

Colts won

quote:

2008 Steelers defense: 237 yards and 13.9 points a game

21 of 40, 240 yards, 3 TDs & 0 INTs

Colts won, on the road, against the eventual Super Bowl champions

quote:

2008 Ravens defense: 261 yards and 15.1 points a game

19 of 28, 271 yards, 3 TDs & 0 INTs

Colts won, 31-3
