I'm not making a defense for castros season this year.
I'm just not on the sell for nothing bandwagon. I don't think last year was a mirage is basically what i'm saying.

The Cubs best move would be to wait until this winter and throw the book at Price.
No reason to trade multiple prospects for Hamels for a wildcard slot this year and Hamels has taken a step back this year across the board. The innings he's pitched could be catching up to him, he's a higher risk than Price and someone you'd have for years no matter what.
Hamels is having his worst year since 2009.
If Hamels goes to say the Yankees, disaster.

Once in the wild card anything can happen, we've seen countless teams (look at last year's World Series) get hot at the right time. Cubs would still control Hamel after this year and would fight for division next year.

I agree with all of that Hog. The right play for CHC is a winter move on Price or Zimmermann (whom I think they sign). If the battle were for the division and not the WC, it's a different story. There the delta between your 1st and 3rd pitchers is much more crucial.

Would be a terrible a decision. Good GM's don't play the oh if we get hot at the right time game either so let's trade away multiple high end prospects when the FA market in 3 months is loaded. They're smarter than that, decent ones at least.

For any team that gets in the playoffs they have a shot. Right now just making the playoffs the Cubs could advance. Hamels, Lester, Arrieta are a solid 3 for the playoffs, the Cubs have more than enough offense, they could be a force in the playoffs.
Plus they are not getting a rental, they are getting an ace under team control at less than what Price may command this offseason.

Cishek is so annoying to watch
. I don't like him as a closer or in any sort of inning-long role, but he is a good ROOGY on a contender.

Not really who I wanted to bolster the pen but if he has regained last years form as some have said, could be great.

More Rumors:
quote:
While the Marlins have fielded interest in righty Tom Koehler and super utilityman Martin Prado, the club is not interested in dealing either player at present. Meanwhile, Miami is open to dealing veteran Dan Haren, but has rebuffed at least one club that asked for money to be sent along with him.
The Yankees are looking at both second base and top rotation candidates, says Heyman, but don’t feel a pressing need to add in either area. New York has no interest in veteran Diamondbacks infielder Aaron Hill, he adds.
While we’ve just heard a suggestion that the Orioles could reverse course, Heyman says that they are still weighing outfield additions. The team has considered rental pieces like Marlon Byrd, Gerardo Parra, and Justin Upton. And he suggests that Carl Crawford or Shane Victorino could make sense as well; presumably, Baltimore would only be interested in either if their current clubs paid down a good bit of salary.
While the Cubs are indeed willing to consider including Starlin Castro or Javier Baez in a deal for Cole Hamels of the Phillies, a source tells Heyman that the team would not be interested in moving both to add the lefty. Philadelphia’s plans for Hamels remain something of a mystery, but per the report the club may be backing down from its previous high-end demands from clubs like the Dodgers (Corey Seager or Julio Urias) and Red Sox (Mookie Betts or Blake Swihart).
There is now virtually no chance that Phillies lefty Cliff Lee will try to make it back this year, and he appears likely to retire over the winter.
As they approach the deadline and look ahead to free agency, the Cubs have some limitations on their spending capacity but will nevertheless try to add David Price (at least once he hits the open market). Meanwhile, the team has at least some interest in Reds starter Mike Leake as a trade piece but are somewhat hesitant to pursue rental options. While the Giants have plenty of rotation options, they too have considered Leake.
he Red Sox have received no trade interest in struggling first baseman Mike Napoli, says Heyman, but has gotten hits on Victorino as well as bullpen arms Koji Uehara and Junichi Tazawa.
The White Sox are looking to add some volume if they deal righty Jeff Samardzija, says Heyman. Chicago would like to pick up four young pieces in any trade.

0.00 ERA in July
1.42 ERA in June
hasn't pitched as a closer since being recalled.

They could but it wouldn't involve high ceiling prospects...

Yeah and he's only thrown 3 innings since the 7th.
Oh well, gave up a weak double A pitcher for him so it's whatever.

How do the Cardinals use him? They have a solid pen...
I am curious what they do with Martinez and wacha who have both eclipsed their previous high in innings. 6 man rotation now that Garcia is ready, grab an extra starter at the deadline/waiver deadline?

I'd imagine as a 7th inning guy for just a matchup situation, Walden is out on rehab assignment right now and will take back his setup man role, Rosey in the 9th obviously, which leaves Cishek, Siegrist, and double play man Maness out there for any other situations.
Garcia is back now, 5 innings no hits no walks in his only rehab start yesterday and is back in STL now.
Mo said he doesn't worry about Wacha's innings like before the season because of how good he feels, but they'll limit CMart I'd imagine, either with Marco Gonzalez making some starts or keeping Cooney in there.

Cards also paying the 6.5M left on his deal.
That's actually pretty steep.

Just 3 million remaining this year, and under control via arbitration in 2016.
