I just listened to him during B1G media days, I must say that I think this guy is going to have Minnesota competing and winning B1G West division titles for years to come. He just gets it! I love his enthusiasm, love and passion for football. This guy is a great young coach. Minnesota has them a great hire! I'm going to be interested to see how he transforms Minnesota. They have everything you need. A great city, a great campus and an awesome brand new stadium!! Although they are B1G rivals, I feel good for Minnesota. How does everybody think this guy is going to do at Minny?

I agree and he's recruiting very well there. I just don't think he stays at Minny for very long. Some other program will snatch him up in a couple years.

The recruiting base in Minnesota/surrounding areas gives the program a ceiling that is lower than probably half the B1G.

But they are in the easier division so that helps.

When he got hired, some people thought it was a dumb move by him because Minnesota is a dumpster fire that doesn't have the support and culture to win. I didn't really buy that. You're in the B1G west in a great city with a new facility. There is no reason they can't be a Wisconsin level program. I will say his passion and energy act can be over the top and cheesy, so it might not fly at some schools.

The guy is an effing snake oil salesman. Yes, he can talk a good game, but we'll see how that translates. In my opinion his litany of stupid metaphors borders on the comical.

quote:

A great city

Great city, poor college town

quote:

great campus

I don't think there's anything too great about it. Too spread out.

quote:

awesome brand new stadium

We call it the Stadiette. Which they can't even fill when they have a decent team. There is no passion there for their team. I do remember, though, the narrative before it was built that an on campus stadium would transform their program, because the dome was what was holding them back. Yeah, no.

In summary, eff Minnesota.

ETA: I agree with the poster above who said it's going to merely be a stepping stone. The first SEC school to come calling, assuming he has a good run, and he's gone.

the great thing about Fleck is he seems to realize that building this is important and that's what his primary goal is

you have said this about every new B1G coach in the past 5 years

Minnesota is recruiting a fringe top 25 class (their best ever, lol)

right behind ...Houston.

I grew up with his Director of Player Personnel, he's hitched to a good wagon.

Nothing like a good press conference to fire up a fan base. I remember how pumped our fans were after listening to Nick Holt's press conference and he was historically bad. People also ate up Ty Willingham's first press conference.

That being said, I think Fleck will be pretty good there. But not because he's enthusiastic and passionate at his press conference.

OP used to slob the knob of Fitzgerald ad nauseam and we see how that turned out

If he can get Minnesota turned around and competing in the next 3 years I wouldn't be surprised to see Notre Dame busting down his door

Yeah. Nothing like turning a perennial loser into its most successful its ever been. I forget, in today's society, results don't matter. It's what it looks like on the surface.

Oh wait, it was Western Michigan that he brought to the Cotton Bowl. What was I thinking?
