10 years old at the time and those last ten minutes I was nervous as hell. The greatest sporting event I watched. I can still remember it like it was yesterday.

I was 13 and feel the same way. Still a big misconception about that game is that most of the younger generations think that was the gold medal game. In reality, that USA team had to go on to beat Finland a few days later to win the gold.

I was 16 and remember someone telling me about it while watching Zebra playing in Rummel's gym.

Final minute

I love the way Michaels just let the crowd noise speak for itself at end.

It also wasn't aired live.

IIRC, we watched it on a Sunday night. It was so easy to not know the outcomes then. No internet, no real news cycle. It was actually sort of nice because you watched it like it was live, even though it wasn't. Nobody knew the outcomes then.

I was a 19 year old in college and watched it on a little black and white TV with my roommate. No cable. Only rabbit ears.

Now, given the BS of today's society, we can officially call those "the good ole days".

It really didn't matter that it wasn't live b/c we had no idea of the outcome. Watching delay was every bit as good as live at that time.

Good Times !

I think the game was televised and played on a Friday night. As I recall, I was catching a connecting flight in Pittsburgh. Back in those days, there were no tv in the terminal. I was a young engineer and couldn’t talk my way into an airline club. Talked with wife, told me score in ongoing game. Found out when home that USA won.

The game was replayed on Saturday I think which we watched.

The Finland game was a tough one, another come from behind. What a great moment in sports history.

What in the world?

I was under the impression that this was the “do you believe in miracles?!” game, that it was the semifinal, and that we went on to lose the gold medal game

I’m an idiot.

Back then it didn't matter, we didn't know any better. A black and white was RED WHITE and BLUE ! I watched on a tiny color set but would never trade it for a big screen today, you'd have to live it to know.

I was 12 and watched it at home. I’m quite jealous that I wasn’t watching Zebra instead, lol. I’ve seen them about 2 dozen times over the years!

Underrated Herb Brooks story from intermission of that gold medal game against Finland:

quote:

Needing to defeat Finland to secure the gold medal, Team USA faced a 2–1 deficit at the end of the second period. According to Mike Eruzione, coming into the dressing room for the second intermission, Brooks turned to his players, looked at them, and said, "If you lose this game, you'll take it to your fricking graves." He then walked towards the locker room door, paused, looked over his shoulder, and said to them again, "Your fricking graves." Team USA came back in the third period to defeat Finland 4–2.

If you let me choose one sporting event in history to back in time and actually go to the game, it would probably be this one.
