They banned it because they realized players were taking it for cardiovascular performance. She was one of the dumb ones that kept doing it once the tour caught on.

Because they didn't just ban it to seek her out.

Is all the blood doping and pill popping these tennis players are doing gonna affect them when they get older?

I ask bc I have no idea.

All that doping and still can't be Serena

Ban that TPOS from tennis

I know right

What the point of cheating if you gonna get stomped into the ground anyway?

I find it hilarious that its the pretty lady of tennis that gets caught cheating and not Serena.

If this was Serena William, this board would have pitch forks out ready burn her legacy to the ground.

She was taking medicine for the past 10 years that had a substance in it called Meldonium.

It was recently banned by WDA early this year. She didn't know and kept taking the medicine.

quote:

I mean she should have known, that is obvious but how do they ban a substance she has been taking 10 years?

quote:

A memo was sent out to athletes by Russia’s anti-doping agency last September informing them of the decision to ban its use.

1) You can't buy Meldonium in the USA. You have to import it from one of those black market pharmacy websites. When a website wants you to pay in bitcoins, you know somethings is up.

Maria Sharapova is Barely in Russia. Her first return to Russia was about 10 years ago. I find it hard to believe she would just suddenly go to a russian doctor and get prescribed this. I think she asked for this based off advice from other Russia athletes.

quote:

The drug was name-checked in the latest investigative documentary on Russian doping reforms by the German Hajo Seppelt on Sunday. The documentary referred to a 2015 study in which 17% of Russian athletes (724 of 4,316) tested were found to have meldonium in their system. A global study found 2.2% of athletes had it in their system.

It seems like Russians have been cheating in sports since the dawn of time.

The standard ban under the World Anti-Doping Code is four years.

I doubt she will be banned that long but she will miss the Olympics.

Looks like it will be either 2 years or 4 years depending on what they determine. Likely a 2 year ban... either way it will probably end her career.

The most disturbing story I've read about is the Algerian national soccer team from the 1980s. The national team coach hired a Russian doctor to give the players performance enhancing drugs without their consent. The doping had horrifying consequences. At least seven players ending up fathering children who are severely mentally handicapped. Here's one of the players describing their child's problems.

quote:

My daughter suffers from … I wouldn’t say that it’s a malformation but she’s missing something. She’s physically and mentally disabled. She doesn’t speak, she’s not autonomous, she’s not clean. At her age (18), she doesn’t know how to do her business alone, to clean herself, or even to eat. Plus she doesn’t walk freely. If you make her stand up, she doesn’t know how to orient herself and walk straight because she doesn’t have balance. In her brain, she’s missing something called the corpus callosum. For others, it’s the same or worse.

She failed a fricking test. What could she have said? One of my Russian athlete friends gave me a drug with Meldonium and I didn't know about it?

Well, I wonder if the tour would allow her to play the injury card for a while.
