I would pay to watch Magnus Carlsen take on Magnus ver Magnusson in Chess Strongmanning.

He's probably the goat. Slightly better than Kasparov.
Then it's probably:
Tier 2: Anand/Karpov/Fischer.

For Magnus, it's not just in Classical; it's also rapid and blitz. He dominates all of it.

I think this is broadly right, on paper. But I do think New Orleans' very own Paul Morphy is naturally the most gifted player ever.

Morphy had a similar burnout as Carlsen and also retired from chess at a young age…

At that level, the games just don’t feel fun… of course they’re the ultimate test, but challenge yourself in chess and you’ll feel headaches from concentrating. It gets magnified when you know most of your games will end in draws that last hours. Causal players don’t feel this as much because they don’t put all the time in studying and are more likely to have decisive games

When you review Alpha Zero games... and some of the more recent hyper-modern engine lines, they all seem to have a style that is similar to Morphy.
He was so far ahead of his time, that Morphy doesn't get the credit he deserves. It wasn't until we had engines above 3600 that we started to understand some of the underlying ideas.
Really a pure genius.

Alot of the modern players are just memorization encyclopedias. I like watching the super GM's play in rapid and blitz, especially when they get creative and force their opponents out of prep.
You get to see who really has the instincts and natural talent.

I'm pretty disappointed that Hikaru couldn't get that final draw against Ding. We'd have another chance to bring the WC back to America... even if it has an asterisk by it.

I think Magnus will come back when it feels like the chess world has forgotten about him and we’re praising the next prodigy… just name him champion emeritus until he plays again

Why an asterisk?

He might just generally have no desire to go whoop one of these lesser players…again.

Bobby Fischer said after he achieved his goal of the world title, he really had no desire to compete...

That chess was boring. Unimaginative.

And that winning at the highest level takes excessive amount of prep as it's just massive amounts of memorization.

He probably makes more money playing poker.

Because he would be beating Nepo and not Magnus.
Beating the #1 contender is not the same as taking down the champ.

Guess he still has a chance to be world champ for the most years because he is so young but still odd to give up a year in your prime.

He's still going to have the highest rating among active players, he said he just enjoys tournaments more than playing 12 game matches against the same guy. Usually they happen every 2 years but he just defended last year and put Nepo in the dirt and secretly might just not want to have to do that again in a rematch. He's playing a tournament I believe around the same time that world championship is going on, so it might just come down to he just prefers to play tournaments.

Maybe it'll all be a long con because he likes tournaments so much that he wishes he could play in the candidates again in 2024 instead of having to sit back and wait to challenge the winner like he has had to do every time for the past decade. Maybe he wants to win the Candidates again and be the challenger. As cocky as he is I wouldn't put it past him

Carlson hasn’t fully recovered from his concussion and another one could be dangerous.

He made the right decision.

Nepo going to smoke Ding. Really wish Hikaru would have come in second and not blown the last game against Ding. He may not have beaten Nepo but the match would be a lot more fun because he would have tried something wild.

So the dude who is the GOAT doesn’t want to defend his world title? I don’t get it? Is it that big of an inconvenience to go play an hour round of chess, or is he scared to get beat?

He just has other interest and seems to like being a celebrity. He recently played in the World Series of Poker, although I think he did pretty bad.

That's what killed my interest in trying to play chess at a high level. Memorizing openings so that you're always sure to be playing the consensus "best" move until well into the midgame does not appeal to me, at all. You aren't playing the game at that point, the game is playing you.

He just curb stomped everyone in a rapid tournament and had a 3327 event rating.
He made super GMs look like rookies.

The format just accentuates his skill.
Fewer people can just use computer prep and memorization to stay close.
