Ultimately the conclusion stands, one that I’m pretty comfortable with, one that I’ve thought a lot about for a long time now, I would say more than a year, probably a year and a half almost, since long before the last match. And I’ve spoken to people in my team, I’ve spoken to FIDE, I spoke to Ian as well. And the conclusion is, yeah, it’s very simple, that I am not motivated to play another match. I simply feel that I don’t have a lot to gain, I don’t particularly like it, and although I’m sure a match would be interesting for historical reasons and all of that, I don’t have any inclination to play and I will simply not play the match.

Instead, we will see Nepo vs. Ding Liren, the top two finishers of the Candidates Tournament

Hikaru must be pissed he didn't draw his last game...he'd be there instead of Ding. Happy for Ding though

So the dude who is the GOAT doesn’t want to defend his world title? I don’t get it? Is it that big of an inconvenience to go play an hour round of chess, or is he scared to get beat?

He’s pretty cocky about how good he is, so I doubt it’s this. He might just generally have no desire to go whoop one of these lesser players…again.

He’s had the title for nearly 10 years. He’s probably bored and stressed about the inevitability of losing

Ok. I know nothing about the drama surrounding the professional chess circuit

Guess he still has a chance to be world champ for the most years because he is so young but still odd to give up a year in your prime.

One of the games in his last match went on for 7 hours.

For those familiar with history of chess competition, where would Carlsen rank among the greats such as Morphy, Capablanca, Fischer, Kasparov etc?
I mean the cat simply does not lose, and he seems to excel in all forms of chess be it classical or speed.

Some random video popped up on YT the other day of him losing to a 17 year old

I think he's won something like 9 in a row. He's been possibly the best player in the world since a very young age.
He just doesn't want to do it for now, I guess.

Its not just one game. Its a series of classical games that normally take 2-4 hours to play. Magnus wanted to incorporate different time controls in the match and FIDE didn't want to go that route.

Had no idea we had some Baws on the MSB that followed Chess

I thought this was going to be about the World’s Strongest Man competition.

And classical being such a grind, it can't be fun to play.
He'd still probably win, but it takes months of full-time studying to prepare.
He already has the money, fame, etc. Playing doesn't buy him much.

Then it's probably:
Tier 2: Anand/Karpov/Fischer.
For Magnus, it's not just in Classical; it's also rapid and blitz. He dominates all of it.
He's probably going to keep playing rapid and blitz and just retire from classical.
I think he's motivated to get to 2900. And with all of the draws and grind that comes along with classical, it doesn't really motivate him to play.
I mean, what's the point? We all know he's probably still the best regardless of which usurper holds the title.

I think he wants to do that professionally as a side hustle.
