Yep. Its been a great ride though.

Going from watching WM being every schools homecoming game sacrifice to being a national power in HS football was unbelievable.

Being near or at the top for nearly 25 years for a public high school in a mid-sized city in NELA is mind boggling.

There is a strong foundation at WM though. With the right coach, WM can once again become a dominate powerhouse in HS FB again.

Love him, like him or hate him, Don Shows was a downright genius. He built a HS FB program that is/was known nation-wide.

I guess you could say Don Shows was the Vince Lombardi of Louisiana HS football.

OK, lets try this again.

EVERY high school in this state, every parish, every HS athletic program in the ENTIRE US has been using the 'holdback' ever since there has been HS sports.

Even college sports does it and allows it, ie the 'red shirt'.

If I were a betting man, we could look into the books of your favorite HS sports program and find many 'hold-backs'. We would find them in just about every HS sports program in the state, in the country.

I have shared this little story several times here. I was doing some family research going through some old newspapers on micro-film.

Just by chance, I came across a news story of how several HS FB programs had been depleted because so many of their players had been drafted in the Korean War, many who were 19 years old.

This was back the early 1950s.

I get it, you're a WM hater like many others. People hate winners, especially programs that win on a consistent basis. Think of Alabama.

I know, I hear it all the time from the idiot locals here in NELA.

The secret to WMs FB success was superior coaching, a college level strength and conditioning program which is year round. Hard nosed, gritty players that knew the game and wanted to win.

Anywho. I am gonna enjoy the playoffs regardless of the outcome and spend lots of time hunting with my family and being with them for the holidays.

Actually, these days we have a group of guys make changes on our birth certificates to allow us to play until we’re 21.

not even close, but I know in mid to late 90s the rate was 80-85%

and yes shows was a great coach at every stop and always had great staffs

I'm just asking a question.. nothing more nothing less

I work with a couple of guys that were in the Rebel Club or whatever their football booster group was and they both despise their HC now. I haven’t gotten to see them play that much, I did watch them play Neville this year and it was shocking how small they were. WM used to have absolute monsters.

1996 we had no 19 year olds on the team and only 3 seniors had held back. Won state.
I can’t verify other years but let’s not act like the hold backs we’re the only reason WM was winning.

We know brah. All those studs raised up in West Monroe that needed Shows to unlock that potential. Like Bradie James.

I think we all know how WM became a power.

Anybody on here know anything about Vandebilt Catholic's team this year? Second round (Div II) opponent for my kid's Loyola Flyers Friday.

I have seen the Terriers a couple of times. Decent squad that Coach Minton has. A good team that controls the line will beat them.
I expect them to lose this week to Loyola.

Vandebilt- good defense, improving, young offense with a stud freshman rb.
Technically a 3A team playing in a weak 4A football district
Ida wreaked havoc on campus and facilities, defensive coordinator passed away mid season, it’s been a pleasant surprise to see the run that they’re on now considering the circumstances. Most here hope it will be a pretty even match up with Loyola. We shall see. Coach Minton doing work in his first season.
