the Oakley plan failed this morning with 23% of the vote, 262-81

LINK /

From Jim Derry

quote:

It fails overwhelmingly (the elite programs amendment). Now voting on whether schools who don't participate in a sport cannot vote on anything to do with that sport.

It passes, 202-136.

quote:

Now voting on to change from whether it would take a 2/3 vote to pass amendments, rather than current majority.

Wow. That passes. If there was ANY chance of LHSAA coming back together, it's over now.

quote:

Vote to allow non-faculty members to coach volleyball passes. We're now debating this AFTER the vote. Pardon me, but if anyone wants to know why this association is messed up, this explains it all. I have never heard of debating an amendment after a vote. There is now chaos and confusion going on. Even I am confused.

I've been a coach in this organization for the last 4 years. The direction this organization has taken is embarrassing.

Pitch count rule for baseball passes. Also going back to old power rankings. Which is good. This years power rankings are absurd

support this even though they already had a rule based on innings pitched... call this the Emerson Gibbs rule 2.0

what happened was, the Denham Springs principal got a new formula passed last year which was overall W% x 3, district W% x 9, and opponents W% x 9 as written on the official agenda. However, when the handbook was updated, the district W% number went from 9 to 2 for some unknown reason.

maybe bc we're in a weak district for baseball, but i like the idea of district games mattering, if they don't, why even have districts?

now two principals from Patterson and South Beauregard made the proposal to change the formula back effective immediately when schedules were made with the new formula in mind. i mean give it a chance, it passed, didn't it? i could see the math being easier the old way but isn't that what we have computers for now?

Thanks be to Kenny Henderson for being a spineless leader for the years leading up to and including the entire split debacle that will ultimately kill the LHSAA.

ETA: Although the members also bear their own responsibility for voting how they have.

Did the amendment mention how this will be enforced? Penalties? Etc?

Oakley didn't pass because the schools just reclassified and B & C will never vote to combine.

Something will pass next year (non-classification year, as it should be) to reduce non-select brackets to 4. When principals are given two options (brand new classification vs. Oakley classification) they will always select what's best for them. If you do it in an off year, it has a much better chance.

it has no chance because they're not gonna pass anything like it

from sportsline poster "logic"

quote:

The State of Louisiana is different. Every State around Louisiana has more classes and state champions because they care about the success of KIDS, I see nothing wrong with more state champs. For example the state of Mississippi which is smaller than the state of Louisiana as far as population has 6 football classes and 8 man in the public school system and 4 classes in the private school system. Private schools do not play in the same districts as well, same for the state of TEXAS which has 6 classes then come playoffs has a big school bracket and small school bracket from each class, and the private schools has there own classes and divisions. WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO REDUCE THE SUCCESS OF KIDS BY REDUCING the number of CHAMPS. THIS OAKLEY PLAN is not for the success of kids; can't believe someone would want this to pass. I am new to this area but last time I checked the state of TEXAS had some really good sports programs

I never knew that more success of student/athletes was a bad thing. Education is about kids succeeding why not let kids have more success. More scholarships in education is a good thing, the college bowls are great for college athletes, only a few bowls would not be good for college football so why is a few more state championships a bad thing. Seems to me a few people who draw up these plans are not thinking of whats best for the KIDS, they seem very selfish.

He made one good call, but then showed he was spineless by backing down when Zachary parents cried that their fighting kids should be allowed to play.

This is how the initial playoff split was passed . Class B and C schools were allowed to vote on the split football playoffs even though they don't have football.

Now that the horse is bolted, they'll close the barn door.

It was the best day for select schools in five years. After today, select schools get to determine their own divisions and playoffs and the change requiring 2/3 votes to amend the constitution effectively blocks attempts to futher split sports.

Also, the sport specific voting rule is a big deal.

Oakley's plan was not well thought out. The underlying idea is there but it had too many significant problems.

The LHSAA is a mess. Basically being run by a bunch of middle-school travel baseball dads.
