So it would be foolish for me to say Drew Brees was my favorite athlete and not Jordan?

Are we going to be able to say the same thing about LeBron 11 years after he retires?

The world loves him way too much to say otherwise. 11 years is plenty of time.

MJ is still the 2nd post popular athlete in America according to this poll and he retired 11 fricking years ago. Am I not the only one blown away by that, especially given some of the athletes we have had in that time span.
I'm blown away that a man who is looked down upon morally by society is so popular at all much less a decade after he retired. These days Shaq says "Ching Ching" to Yao Ming, and he's forced to apologize publicly. We could find out tomorrow that Michael Jordan murdered his own father as well as Nicole Simpson, and Air Jordans would still fly off the shelves.

You said someone's answer to the question "who is your favorite athlete?" could be foolish. I'm asking how?

Meh, ESPN had a damn channel dedicated only to Tiger Woods at the Open Championship this morning.

What would be a foolish choice though? People can like an athlete for any reason.

We all know Jordan is way more evil than Tiger.

Much harder to know about though.

He didn't play in the ridiculous social media era we live in today and was super protective of his image. Plus he has sort of stayed out of everything media related since he retired.

Lebron lacks that frick you attitude it takes to take over games. It's that trait that will always separate Lebron from MJ.

How convenient, the thing that separates LeBron from MJ is immeasurable. All this time I thought that it was 6 rings, but I see that the narrative is starting to change for those trying to defend MJ from the ascent of LeBron.

Intriguing point. How would Jordan behave today? Likely not the same way he did at the time.

It still doesn't explain to me just why we're ok with him being the devil. It was hard to know back then, but we know now. And we don't care. It's the weirdest thing.

Not everyone is looking for a role model in their athletes.

Meh, Tiger Woods is far more vilified than Jordan despite both being equally as dominant.

I personally do not care how an athlete acts off the court/field/course, within reason. However, I don't understand how Jordan is celebrated for his competitiveness (aka being an a-hole), while LeBron is discounted for being too nice at times. Meanwhile Tiger is criticized for being a jerk and terrible husband. Doesn't make a lick of sense.

That isn't really how I would frame it. They just have a different mental makeup. I don't really consider it a knock on either one of them.

Neither do I. Unfortunately you're much more rational than the majority of sports fans and 99% of the MSB.

Apparently I'm too rational to be a hardcore fan according to some.

Luckily they can't see me literally sweating when the Spurs are in the playoffs
