"The Los Angeles Lakers plan a drawn-out and exhaustive search to replace coach Mike D'Antoni, but sources close to the process insist that they hope to "make a splash" with their eventual hire. To that end, sources say, Lakers officials intend to reach out to two of the biggest names in the college game -- UConn's Kevin Ollie and Kentucky's John Calipari -- to at least gauge their interest in the job. The Lakers' immediate aims, sources say, are to focus on the draft and free agency and "hold back (on the coaching front) until they get a better sense of the marketplace."

quote:

Another factor in their thinking, sources say, is leaving the coaching position open in the short term in case a potential free-agent target -- such as LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony -- tells team officials in July that he would consider coming to the Lakers if the coach of his choosing is hired. The team is not expected to pursue Duke legend Mike Krzyzewski this time, after unsuccessfully trying to lobby Krzyzewski to leave Durham in the past, but sources say that L.A. is "intrigued" by both Ollie and Calipari."

If the Thunder lose tonight, Ollie will be named their head coach within a week or two, IMO.

Would be pretty dumb, IMO. Coach Cal makes the money he does cause he pulls in the top talent every year, not his x's and o's

Ollie might be good in a couple of years. But if the Lakers want to get Kobe one more ship before he leaves, they should pass on Ollie

I like Ollie as a coach but outside of his tourney run he was pretty average.

As a lakers fan I don't want Ollie

If they're considering college coaches why not aim really high and make izzo a godfather type offer

I'm sick of constantly hearing Izzo's name thrown around like he is a top 5 coach. The guy has won one national title. One!

Gene Chizik has won one national title! For fricks sake!

Publicly bitched about the Rudy Gay trade

Screamed at Hollinger during a practice for discussing analytics with Austin Daye

Terrible record at developing talent outside of Mike Conley (only Grizzlies drafted player currently on the roster)

Overall anti-analytics approach to the NBA

This is how you end up getting a bad fit (like D'Antoni).
Worry about getting the right guy, not making a splash

Also, could have had Kevin Love but traded him on draft day for OJ Mayo

Ollie is extremely respected around the league. I would not be surprised at all if OKC fires Brooks if they go after him as well.

I'm dead serious... I don't get it. Year in and year out they under-achieve.

I just looked at some of the Grizz's first round picks... Wow.
