I have noticed a lot of the girls do this running drag hit (not drag bunt).

Why do so many of the players do this? Is it to get more power behind the bat?

Sometimes it looks like they are 10 feet in front of the plate by the time they finish the swing.

But they are not running towards 1st base, they are running straight forward

Yeah for the running start... It's inly 60' between bases. Any delay by the infield and the runner is almost always safe

They call them "slap hitters" bases are shorter distance in softball. Usually faster players trying to bounce a ball & beat out the throw to first.

I believe they call that a "slap" and I just can't get used to seeing it...looks to me like they are outside of the batter's box before the ball gets there...

must work though, because nearly every team does it with certain batters...

It's "slap" batting.

It gives them a running start to 1st.

Why don't they allow overhand pitching in softball?

Not really. It only looks that way. When I see replays of slaps, they are usually all still in the box when contact is made. They sort of pause right there at the end where they would swing if they are going to swing to stay in the box.

You don't think opposing coaches would point it out if they were out of the box?

I have a ton of questions as well...two that stick out to me are:

1. Why do batters run past first base after they get walked?

2. Are players allowed to leave and come back in throughout the game?

I always thought it was the hitters afraid of being hit by the ball

you don't think opposing coaches in baseball would make sure their opponents touch the bag on double plays?

I watched a girl in the Auburn game last night with less than two outs and a runner on third hit a short chopper to 3B with the runner going on contact.

Batter runs through the bag without even looking at the play. Finally realizes 3B runner is in a rundown and takes off for 2nd and gets hosed.

Couldn't believe it. Just seems so basic.

I believe you can leave once and come back in.

It's also stupid that their best pitcher can essentially pitch every inning of every game.

I wish the LSU girls the best but this thread reminds me why I don't a give a frick about softball. I'll check the final score online.

Had the misfortune of seeing a good chunk of that 5 hour debacle of a ucla game yesterday (waiting out the rain) and it was like it would never end. Players coming in and out, constant dancing and silliness in the dugout, and huge celebrations over every positive play even in the first and 2nd inning. It's tough to watch if you are accustomed to watching real sports.
