This is pretty pathetic of the NFL if you ask me.

quote:

Junior Seau’s heartbroken daughter won’t be allowed by the Pro Football Hall of Fame to speak at her late father’s induction ceremony.

quote:

Seau family sued the NFL for wrongful death, saying the league did not properly educate the linebacker about the long-term health risks of repeated concussive blows to the brain. Because it would be “redundant,” in the words of a Hall of Fame spokesman, with a five-minute video presentation on the football accomplishments of the Chargers great.

The other inductees at the Aug. 8 festivities in Canton will be introduced by speeches from their presenters.

quote:

“It’s frustrating because the induction is for my father and for the other players, but then to not be able to speak, it’s painful,” Sydney Seau told the New York Times. “I just want to give the speech he would have given. It wasn’t going to be about this mess. My speech was solely about him.”

The Seaus were not informed of the rule until July. Seau’s widow, Gina, added she was “very surprised” by the policy, considering the family wasn’t planning “to use the Hall of Fame as a platform,” though she stands to receive up to $4 million in a class-action settlement with the NFL.

Good. His family has exploited his death enough already.

quote:

Just like the lawsuit is all about him, right? It has nothing to do with you. You just want justice for dear ol' Dad - to the tune of millions of dollars in your bank account.

quote:

Right. Just like you haven't used his death as a platform. Why should the NFL trust you?

Regardless of how the NFL feels about the family, it's really a good business decision.

1. Because of pending lawsuit
2. Protecting the brand against the possibility of frivolous accusations/comments in what is supposed to be a celebration.

I am not a fan of the NFL these days, but this move is sound in every way.

While they're at it, the NFL might as well start booting out current members like Mike Ditka,Tony Dorsett & Joe DeLamielleure who led the movement better medical aid, more brain research & who participated in studies themselves. The majority of players in the class action lawsuit against the NFL are much older guys including several Hall of Famers. Might as well ban those guys from the ceremonies that take place that weekend.

That's not the NFL's job IMO.

All those guys are suing the NFL and blaming them for murdering their father? News to me.

If you hadn't noticed, the class action suit has been settled.

quote:

A federal judge has given final approval to a class-action lawsuit settlement between the National Football League and thousands of former players, the league said.

The agreement provides up to $5 million per retired player for serious medical conditions associated with repeated head trauma.

Yeah, let's compare apples to peanuts. I clearly see the comparisons.

They're not prohibiting Seau from being inducted. In fact, as far as I can tell, they're not doing anything different than they do for all inductees. Apart from introductions, family have never given speeches at NFL HoF induction ceremonies, including for other deceased players. Why should the NFL make an exception for the family that's suing it? Did Ditka's, Dorsett's, or DeLamielleure's family make speeches at their HoF inductions? Without looking, I'm going to guess not. So your comparison makes no sense.

PR wise this looks terrible

But people will forget it in 2 weeks.

If you let her speak and she hands the NFL their arse over the lawsuit, that's a top news story for a month and a good way to lose a shite ton of leverage for a settlement or in a court.

I'll take option A, because I don't buy for a second that she wouldn't use that platform

This couldn't be anymore wrong. Family members have given introduction speeches at the ceremonies for years especially for deceased inductees.

Inductees who are alive have the right to chose. Off the top of my head, Walter Payton is one who allowed his son to give a speech during his ceremony.

quote:

But on Saturday, 12-year-old Jarrett Payton stepped to the microphone with another in mind.

``I`ll try to get this over with quickly,`` Jarrett said as he began the introductory speech for his father, former Bear running back Walter Payton.

``I`m very privileged to do this,`` he said in a four-minute introduction to his father that was an endearing combination of young nerves and family affection.
