If you are going to take Paps side on this for choking his teammate, put your name on it. That's my take.

All this shows is that the majority of baseball players are idiots who cling to "unwritten rules"

No one gives a shite about your unwritten rules, baseball.

Harper has been doing that shite all year, now they are losing and he is hearing the truth. Not a fan of pap but I'm fine with his actions in this one

Harper has absolutely nothing to do with the Nats losing. He is putting up a top 100 season in the history of modern baseball based on WAR. He is the clearcut MVP in the NL.

Baseball players are apparently fricking morons, based on the link Lester Earl posted, though.

Running out pop ups\grounders isn't an unwritten rule. It's the same as playing to the whistle in football. Don't assume an out.

What? Not running out obvious outs. oh no, the horror.

Funny how things really turned south for them around the trade deadline. Wonder who they acquired? Not harpers fault at all that team is struggling.

I think liked mark derosa's take on this

quote:

Here's my problem with Jonathan Papelbon. You've played 63 innings this year. You've been in the clubhouse probably - every closer I've been with - through the fifth inning getting a rubdown, eatin' a sandwich, doing your Jobe exercises, takin' your time. You've earned the right. His pedigree - he's earned the right to do that. That's the way Smoltzy went about it. All the great closers I played with, they're not gonna get down there in the first inning. You're top-stepping a guy who's played in 1,262 innings, who's hitting .336 with 41 homers, is gonna be the National League MVP and you're questioning whether or not he goes to the post every day. That's tired, okay? No reliever should tell a position player anything about hustle. Go stand out there in the rain, sleet, and snow while you guys are giving up gap shots. That bothered me.

Papelbon is a douche, but Harper needs to run out routine pop-ups and grounders.

Be a fricking pro.

So basically what he is saying here is that if you are a closer you can't be a vocal leader on a baseball team, while making a bunch of sweeping generalizations about how Papelbon conducts himself as a player and teammate. I think that's bullshite.

Harper leads the NL in BA, HR, Runs scored, OBP, Slugging, and OBPS.

Even if he is cocky, he's been carrying that team.

Meanwhile, Papelbon seems to be a bit of a hothead who throws at batters. I think that may be what started this. Harper had said that Philly might retaliate for having had Papelbon hit a batter by hitting him (Harper).

That's the biggest problem with this. Paps isn't the right one to deliver the message for a host of reasons. One being that he can't do it without a choke slam followed by giving up 5 runs.

Being the mvp and franchise star for a team Pap just recently came on to?

Yeah Im sure Pap gives it everything he has on every pitch.

Your fine with him choking and bitching out the franchise star of a team he just recently joined?

Are you really trying to paint papelbon as a vocal leader of a team? Or just taking umbrage to Derosa's overall point. Because i do kind of agree that he didn't really need to take a shot at all closers.

But to your point. I certainly think it's harder for a non every day guy to be a leader, yea. They're not in the dugout for most of the game, and they can't really do anything on a daily basis as a follow my example type guy. I think there are certainly exceptions to that general feeling but i wouldn't ever consider papelbon as being that exception.

But i also don't think that it's even worth mentioning that in a lost season harper didn't run out a pop fly.

I am going to be honest with you, I have no idea about the Nationals or MLB in general right now

Harper has been hurt multiple times throughout his career already (most of the time due to busting his arse and running into walls). The idea that he should be sprinting down the line on a meaningless fly ball that will be an out 99.9999% time is laughably stupid.

As much as I hate to say it, Albert, Papi and Miggy have earned the right not to run out every ball. Partly age, respect and risk of injury. Harper is 22, he hasn’t earned it.

LOL

Here's a thought: If running out a ball puts you at significant risk of injury, you're either too fat or too old continue the charade of being a professional athlete.

Nothing wrong with Pap being a leader but a leader would not have tried to choke out a player coming off the feild. Nothing about trying to punk somebody in the wide open view of the world is professional or displays leadership.
