The best coach in the game, K, has fully embraced it like Cal has.
Meh we'll see how it works for him. Its not a good strategy long term. Junior and Senior led teams will always dominate. Every once in a while you will get a Syracuse(Melo and Mcnamara) or UK(Davis and Gilchrist) or Duke(Allen Okafor Jones and Winslow) but they will be few and far between.

He already has won a title doing it.

I'd argue Cal sticking with the experience over talent in the Final Four is what cost them an undefeated season. A Ulis/Booker backcourt likely wins that game for them.

I'd argue the down seasons have been more few and far between. At least for Cal so far. Duke and UK should be both top 5 teams next season.

It's about the kids and preparing them for life after college, that means more than any title.
Lay off Calipari!

Yeah, he might not know this, but winning a national championship in college basketball is difficult. One bad night can end your season.

I get that titles are what you play for, but judging the success and merit of a coach mainly off the results of a luck driven tournament seems pretty silly to me.

I'd say he's quite underrated.

How may coaches have coached for 30 years or won a national title?

How many coaches have taken an A-10 team to the Final Four, won a national title with a different team, and come within seconds of another national title with a third team? All that and he's also taken the New Jersey Nets to the playoffs. No small feat.

Can't argue those facts. Now, his tactics--the NCAA penalties, vacating wins--are a different story. But is he much more crooked than guys like Pitino and Roy Williams?

Cal is arguably the 2nd best college coach in the last 30 years behind coach K. You could argue Izzo, Calhoun, and maybe Boeheim right around there. The fact that he only has 1 NC speaks way more to the terribly flawed--while granted, exciting--system to crown the CBB NC. Cal is one of the greatest coaches to ever don a college position. If you can't recognize that, that's on you, not Cal.

This is well said.

Considering Memphis was in the championship, and seconds away from winning it, I'd say you are an idiot

Considering how you missed his point, you are the idiot. Memphis has 0 National Titles in any relevant sport. So the fact the OP is using Cals finals run at UM as a negative is idiotic. UMASS also has 0 titles in any major sport. So once again, the fact Cal made a run there is fantastic.

He has been at a program that truly competes for titles for 7 years and he has one title.

1/7 is 14%

Coach K wins national titles at exactly 14% while at Duke......

That isnt the point. The point is to judge his years at UMASS and UM based on National Titles is ludicrous. Those programs have 0 in their history for any major sport

Preseason sure but postseason? If Allen stays I could see Duke in the top 5 highly doubt UK will be top 5 though

Ken Pomeroy ? ?@kenpomeroy
UPDATED top 10 2016-17: 10) Virginia, 9) Indiana, 8) Wisconsin, 7) Oregon, 6) UNC, 5) Kansas, 4) Villanova, 3) Duke, 2) Kentucky, 1) Louisville

Kentucky's recruiting class:

#5, #6, #7, #17, #24, and UK leads (supposedly) for #16

Add returning players: Briscoe, Lee, Willis, Hawkins, Humphries

Insane.

Definitely not better than Pitino.
