If a $20,000 lottery ticket fell out of the sky and landed in the hands of an unemployed father of two who is going away to jail shortly, you would expect him to cash it in, right? That is basically the situation Scott Shelton finds himself in, and he has reportedly decided not to.

When Jermaine Kearse chucked the ball into the stands after scoring the game-winning touchdown in Sunday's NFC Championship Game, Shelton was the one who caught it. He said that a sports memorabilia dealer has already offered him $20,000 for the ball, but he planned to give it back to Kearse. He later indicated that he might instead save it for his son, but either way, the ball isn't for sale.

What would you do?

I imagine I wouldn't be spending a minimum of $200 on a ticket to that game in the first place, but does this make you a great fan or just an idiot for not cashing in, given you're unemployed with kids and going to jail the day after Super Bowl?

I know I would have given Jeter's 3000th hit ball back to him for free.

Moron fricking idiot.

I know its a football that was a part of a big play, but he could go buy another football that looks the same as it, and use it as a memorial ball. Sell the frick out of it dumbass

I think he's stupid but there are a ton of stupid people in the world so it's not out of the realm of possibility that all this publicity leads to a Kickstarter for him and he ends up with 100K and still gets to keep the ball.

I'd sell it for $20,000 in a heartbeat

Idiot.

First of all, those seats he was sitting in were a minimum of $600 on the secondary market all week. So he's either dumb for not selling his ticket, or buying his ticket considering he doesn't have a job.

If I didn't have a job and was offered $20K, I wouldn't even think twice about it.

It doesn't sound like this guy has been making very good decisions anyways

With baseball it's a bit different because they're hitting the ball out of the park....kearse threw the damn thing in the stands. If he wanted it that bad he should have kept it, I'd cash the frick out of that thing.

Well if that's the case, then he's dumb for not selling his ticket considering he has no job.

This.

If Kearse wanted it back, why wouldn't he open up his checkbook and counter the $20K offer?

I tend to agree that I would sell it, but I think you have to put yourself in that situation with a team that you cared about. For instance, in the semifinal playoff game (one game before the national championship, or Super Bowl in this case) and Coop caught the game winning td and threw it into the stands and it landed in my lap, I don't know if I would sell it or not. Hell, I might return it to him, or the University for free.

Now, if I were unemployed with kids, there is no doubt that I would sell the ball.

Da frick?

Kearse doesn't want it, he threw it in the stands. It's not like a home run ball where the batter never gets his hands on it.

I agree that it seems like he has already shown pretty bad judgment just by being at the game in the first place while unemployed and with a family, unless the tickets were just gifted to him, and he didn't have an opportunity to sell them.

I think it's pretty plain that the dude is a fool.

I always tend to have the athletes' back, way more than the norm around here.

But there isn't a ball out there that if I caught I'd just give back to the player, i'd sell it every single time. In this situation especially, I get the excitement angle obviously, but Kearse threw it in the stands, I'm keeping the ball at that point.

Jeter's 3000th hit, Bonds 756th homer, I'm keeping and selling all of them and not feeling one bit of remorse for doing so.

I just would feel badly because Jeter's 3000th hit isn't supposed to be a homer. Not a fan in the park is thinking that they'll catch it.

ETA: And the package the fan received for giving it back was probably worth at least $100,000 lol

If they're willing to pay $20k, I bet they would go to $30k

I wouldn't feel "a couple hundred K, at minimum" bad.
